I'm at work. There are no valves here to check - except perthaps some nuvistors somewhere - that's got you intrigued...
The only shiny valves I can think of are RF pentodes and EF86's.
Everything else is grey. But they aren't graphite.

The title is "Tentative EL84 Design". What does your cockeyed view on shiny plates have to do with that?

Besides, plates are "shiny" or black, etc, based on heat dissipation requirements. A black plate will dissipate more heat. That's why heasinks are often painted or anodized black. Old battery tubes with low heat all use shiny plates.

It has to do with this in that your fave 5755 are available in graphite plates and the regular sputtered ones.

I would have thought that if these small signal valves were using graphite, some if not all, would be free of barium getters. But to the best of my memory, they all have getters.
What's going on?

Are you serious about the colour of plates being responsible for the soundquality ? Please give some explanation for the not-knowing like me. I have heard these reports before but there were always some contradictionary examples that messed up the assumption.
