System Pictures & Description

Here are some photographs showing my prototype 3D printed horns. I modelled and printed the various parts myself -which took about two weeks of almost nonstop printing. I needed about 2000 meter of 3mm filament during the process...

The mid/high horn has a Le'Cleach curve with mouth termination of 360 degrees. I am thinking of starting a separate tread about these horns and how they are built and measured, if people are interested.

The driver is the well respected BMS 4592ND; when they were launched back then, I was one of the early purchasers as I saw the huge advantage of a coaxial driver, and I must say it was my best investment that got me years of joy.. uhhm it took a lot of time to dial in these drivers, but if you succeed you will be rewarded. DSP has made things so much easier...

My first horn with these drivers were a radial tractrix horn made of concrete. It was a good horn, but this one sound better to me. Actually it is impossible to compare, because I did not have a dsp at hand back then. It may also be better... I did not keep the old ones as I disposed them due to storage issues. One thing is for shure: the printed ones are much lighter.

I think these horns are pretty unique, I never found other examples of such a big horn 3D printed and I guess for a reason. I may release the design on thingiverse.com, if there would be a demand. I have a second pair waiting to be assembled, I will try them on Cabasse DOM8 drivers that I own and do not yet have a purpose for.

Those are beautiful. Did you ever end up posting the file on thingiverse? Considering tweeters for my next build and really feeling these.

A brief description of my sound system:
Direct drive turntable and moving coil cartridge for vinyl´s " mint" and MM for others, RIAA tube phono pre-amplifier, Push Pull power amplifier also tube with 38 watts / channel in Ultralinear mode or 28 watts / channel in Triode mode.
I use the high resolution DAC for streaming and / or playing CDs
The amplifier feeds the full range of frequencies to the high-efficiency speakers, it is a Troels Gravesen design with a double horn output to the floor, and direct radiation to the front - with tweeter and midwoofer - and to the rear with two 10-inch drivers each cabinet.
To cover the sub-frequencies I use a 450 watt / channel PA amplifier that feed two sealed and corner subwoofers PA 18 ", the left one is in the same environment of the photograph (excuse the quality), and the right one can be seen in the adjoining environment.
Greetings

It's never finished. Latest in a parade of my modular speakers, here configured as two way passive L baffles, actively crossed to a midbass coupler, also actively crossed to a subwoofer.

Here is my speaker project.
Its evolving and not finished as yet.
Davidlouis VX8 is the Crown Jewel of this set up
The Millennium tweeter is ripped out and replaced witha chinese paper weeter The Kasun double magnet 3 inch paper cone tweeter much much better than the Millennium's 87db sens, kasun @ 91 db sens
DavidLouis VX8 95db/40hz- say 12khz
DavidLouis W4/91 db sens maybe 80 hz - say 10khz
Seas W18E001 Exce/87db sens (IF THAT!!Seas fudges their sens #'s)l w a Mundorf Supreme SGO 1uf cap
Kasun paper tweeter/91 db sens w Mundorf EVO Silvergold cap 8uf

Something up with 1 channel, weaker vs the other.
So not up to top performance
here you get a idea of what a dual Ful range is all about adding the DLW4 made a very nice gain in soundtsgae.
Diana Krall's voice never sojnded so good.
Will add ina Davidlouis VX8 , might keep the W4 in or if the VX6 does not performas hoped, it will go away and stay with the W4,,,then I may also try the Tang Band W3 1878 to see it performas.
maybe late march I'll have some final design.
Paper tweeter will be replaced witha Davidlouis Be/Nd tweeter(Scan Speak clone for alottt less) late March.
The DLVX8 looks to be a clone of the Voxativ's wood cone speaker.
Bass from the tiny W4 has some kick for a lil guy.
Not sure how to copy a link for upload a pic.
But here is a YT upload of the speaker in action.

DavidLouis VX8+DavidLouisW4 w N/d magnet + W18+ Kasun paper tweeter - YouTube
Hey thanks for turning me on to Sophie Millman.

This DIY horn system is the culmination of 45 yrs. of speaker building and commercial speaker ownership. I will forever be grateful to Dr. Bruce Edgar for helping me with the design of this horn system.

So, here is my system description:
Speaker system: This is per channel.
Tweeter: TAD ET-703 ( beryllium) which covers 10khz. to 45KHz. I made the aluminum horn that is powder coated red.
Upper Mid range driver: Custom field coil driver made by Jeffrey Jackson and Dave Slagle using JBL 3" beryllium diaphragm. Covers 5kz. to 1 khz.
Upper Mid range horn: Custom made by me using layers of baltic birch plywood in a 1000hz tractrix curve. Covers
Low Mid range driver; Classic Audio field coil driver with Tru-extent 4" beryllium diaphragm. Covers 450hz. to 5khz.
Low Mid range Horn: Sierrra Brooks 250 hz. mahogany tractrix curve.
Mid Bass drivers: 2 Altec 515B's 16 Ohm drivers in parallel per horn. Covers 60hz. to 450hz.
Mid Bass horn: Hypex curve with double 10 1/4" square throats.
Subwoofer Drivers: 2 TC Sounds LMS 5400's 18" drivers in 9.5 cu. ft. sealed cabinet using dual opposed configuration.

There are 4 Lambda variable powers supplies ( 0 to 20 volts ) set at 15 volts to power the 4 field coil drivers.

The horn speaker crossovers are all 6db passive using mostly Duelund capacitors and 8 AWG Solen air core inductors along with Path power resistors.

Electronic components:
Preamplifier: Cary SLP-05 modified by removing all electrolytic caps from the power supply and replaced by film capacitors.
Amplifiers: For the horns-- Electra-Print custom 845 mono blocks with ELROG 845 output tubes.
For the subwoofers-- Pair of Crown I-Tech 5000hd amps strapped as mono blocks EQ'd flat from 12hz. to 60hz with 48 db filter slope.
Source (for now) : Modwright Sony XA 5400 with separate tube power supply

Noted Joe's system.....i simply don't have the room/space for horns.
I do know what a musical delight a proper horn system can bring. Breathaking ! This will cost you a lot of time/money/effort to get everything right as a hornsystem is ruthless: it simply will show all defaults in the complete system (the horn-system itself included). But if you get it right: bliss.

Again: i do not have that space which is a requirement for a proper horn system. Joe has....and makes optimal use of it !
My speaker system is based on open baffles (woofer) and K-tubes (mid & highs). Of course both systems react to the acoustical environment but they do function in smaller spaces.

My system:
Speakers (DIY):
  • von Langa A1000 15" woofer (in open baffle; up to 500 Hz)
  • von Langa AD-5110 2" compression driver (with K-tube; 500 Hz ~ 4250 Hz)
  • von Langa A4000 1" compression driver (with K-tube; from 4250 Hz upwards)
All drivers are field coils. Next to each speaker is a stack of Rohde & Schwarz NGPV power supplies

XO (partly DIY)
  • active analogue divided by a PAP-C1 (modified power supply) between woofer and mid/highs.
  • passive divided between mid and highs

Analogue source:
  • Caeles turntable (heavily modified), air bearing / air flotation/isolation (400 kgs affair)
  • Rigid Float tonearm
  • Holistic Audio HA103SEL MC cartridge
  • Silvercore Phono 1 RIAA

Digital source:
  • Bel Canto CD2 cd-transport
  • DIY DAC (TDA1541 NOS; no active output stage - just trannies)

Preamp (DIY):
Repeater triode in mustage
Tube options: PT8, 4019A, 3A-107a, 101F, etc....any 4V/0,25A repeater triode will do
External 63 steps volume control

Poweramps (DIY):
  • woofer-amp: 35TG in SE-parafeed. 8Watt
  • mid-amp: 6C45 in PP-parafeed. 2,6 Watt
  • tweeter-amp: 4P1L - ED111 in parafeed; 0,7 Watt. Instead of the 4P1L the Ec or AC101 can be used; Instead of the ED111 the ML6/VT105 or 12B4 or 6S4 can be used.

All in all a well sounding set even in this confined place.
Different tubes can do a lot in a system; always on the lookout for interesting ideas. It is obvious i do not go for the standard/commercial ones....

Happy listening
Regards,
Reinout

Both of the above systems show how different (and interesting !) this audio-hobby can be.
Totally different solutions but with the same goal: correct sound/music reproduction.
What "correct sound/music reproduction" is, is already difficult to answer but good enough for me to explore.....
The path/search of audio-nirvana never stops.

Enjoy your music/set !
