Same issue here for one that I was fixing for someone on a Shanling CD-T100se.
The problem is that the Focus OK status is not received. This needs to be received before the motor starts up. It seems to be because on the cheap replacement VAM1201 assemblies, the parallel distance between the laser and the disc is too great.
I could trick it in to getting focus, by lifting the front of the disc upwards (causing the disc to be closer to the laser lens), right after inserting a disc. It then looks for Focus OK again, when hitting Play.
I had to shim the motor by removing it from the plastic assembly, and inserting a 0.5mm shim. I'm sure there is a way to tune the focus via a trimmer, but this mechanical method seems to have worked.
