Good lord what an abysmally written article, full of unproven assumptions. The humorous irony is the attacks on bottled water will drive consumers to sodas, processed fruit juices, energy and brewed drinks. Maybe we should legislate everyone carry a water bottle.

Seems a little vague about the exact origin.
Several brands sold around here state that they are drawn from the public water supply in a certain nearby suburb. Doesn't seem to hurt their sales - most people seem to buy this sort of thing for the convenience of water that's not tethered to a tap and easy to refrigerate, not so much as a status symbol or special taste treat.
At least in UK Dasani was sold at a premium. Bottled water at 10p/litre is fine. But why pay 5, 10 or 15 times as much for what is still at the end of the day a bottle of water? And as for restaurants look at mcdonalds. In UK a medium soda is cheaper than a bottle of water. Luckily in UK if a restaurant serves alcohol they have to supply tap water for free.

Dasani, Aqufina and the bulk of the rest are processed. The fact that they are sourced from municipal water systems has nothing to do with the value added. Think of the water quality from the tap in Flint Michigan.
Typically the water goes through a ion exchange (think water softener) the hard water / deposit type minerals Ca++, Fe and ….. are exchanged for sodium Na+ ions. The insoluble stuff will clog up the next step in the process.
Next the softened water goes through the reverse osmosis process where the Na ions are restrained by a semipermeable membrane. The membrane is later washed of the trapped stuff and reused. This is the same process used in the multibillion dollar seawater desalination plant recently built near San Diego California.
Back to the topic of this thread, this water is ~ 1 Meg Ohm in resistivity.
Then the secret formula of minerals is added for flavor. It is the same process and same taste wherever you travel. This is what you are paying for. Better than the resistors we quibble about, you can taste the difference in a blind test every time.
The next step in the water process if you choose to go there is deionization. This produces reagent grade water. Scott this is the same water that AnalogDevices uses to wash their chips. 18 Meg Ohm water, impurities may cause distortion.

Actually, clean water plants produce some of the best water anywhere. I look after a couple plants around here for telecom. Their water is fantastic. However, once it goes out into "the system", they pick up all kinds of impurities. At that point the water has been degraded a lot - depending on the condition of all the mains, tanks and pipes.

It deals mainly with apparel and accessories, but the same trend applies to most categories of consumer goods. Ordinary stuff, given a designer label and sold at a premium.
Not that I object, as long as I can have the same stuff without the label at a rock-bottom price. Better still, if I could get the real premium stuff with or without a label at a rock-bottom price. It would be good to get Black Gates at the same price as Lelon or G-Luxon, but that's not going to happen any time soon.
