As long as you keep DC out of the core, i.e. parafeed or some sort of forced current balanced push-pull, then they can work extremely well with low impedance valves. I think I remember seeing a schematic here somewhere for a parafeed power SRPP stage with television horizontal deflection amplifier valves. This would seem to make good sense since that was what SRPP was developed for-driving a capacitive load. That could be a very low cost amp with great performance on transients.
