Hi,

Pocoyo asked me to try and solve solve the problem with the NOS mode,

I had a quick look at the schematics,

The problem seems to be the following:

SAA7220 outputs 32BCK/WS frame

CS8414 outputs 64BCK/WS frame

The CPLD is probably designed to handle 32BCK/WS frames for L/-L and R/-R decoding only.

The result is incorrect decoding of the NOS-I2S input signal, and failure to provide the correct I2S output signals.

The solution is either a CPLD programmed to handle 64BCK/WS frame, or a dedicated decoder that splits 64BCK/WS frames correctly.

I could provide a schematic diagram of such a decoder.

The decoder has to convert 64BCK/WS into L/L- and R/R-

Other possibility is to leave-out the CPLD, and change the design to L/R and -L/-R operation. This would include some modding.

Hope this helps,

John

HELP FROM A FRIEND

Dear all my friend in this thread

I asked help from ecsdesign who build the TDA 1541a
and fortunately he will assist someone who build "the
TDA 1541a DAC for limited budget diyer"

But for solve the problem, I think he needs
- Schematic
- Specify the Exact Problem

For someone who knows the schematic maybe
can posting here
- where the schematic ( Thread ?, Page ?)
- Tell with your exact problem in thread & email
directly to ecs design so he can answered for
all of you

I hope all friend in here can use this change to
fix their problem with help from ecsdesign than
you throw it away your dacs to trash can

Thank you ecsdesign - Mr John Brown,
Theres a hard to found something free
But still ... Theres an angel in this world

Regards, Jeffry

Others Information

Maybe i need to give more information

ecsdesign just give INFORMATION to anybody
who have exactly problem with their limited
bugedter DACS. His help related to us because
we are in the same forum WWW.DIYAUDIO.COM

This help give it cause TubeLover / Thomas Siu
had physical problem for this time

ecs design didnt have any connection with selling
of this product or minus spareparts if you dont have
it from Tube lover / Thomas Siu

ecs design just related for his product
http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=79452

I hope you can maximise your DACS

the connection for balanced is on page 8. ;)

Hi,

DAC in NOS mode:

The following schematics were used for reference:

dac.pdf (post #1618)
der.pdf (post #1632)

First prepare the DAC MODULES as follows:

> J19: jumper on pin1 & pin2 (selecting I2S time-multiplex mode)
> J20: jumper placed (connect pin2 & pin4 for compatibility with TDA1541)

I2S ROUTING:

> remove SAA7220
> Dipswitch S3, all OFF / OPEN (interrupts I2S & clock signals to SAA7220 socket).
> Dipswitch S7, all OFF / OPEN (interrupts I2S outputs from SAA7220 socket).
> Dipswitch S8, all ON / CLOSED (routes I2S signals to DAC module connected to J8 and to S11).
> Remove CPLD module (J25, J28, J29). CPLD only supports 32BCK/WS, so it cannot be used with 64BCK/WS from CS8414 in NOS mode.

Provide I2S signals WS and BCK for DAC module connected to J5:

> Dipswitch S11, switch #1 (pin1 & pin8) ON / CLOSED (WS routed to pin1 of J5)
> Dipswitch S11, switch #2 (pin2 & pin 7) ON / CLOSED (BCK routed to pin2 of J5)

!! Dipswitch S11 #3 and #4 OFF / OPEN !! (these signals are not used for J5)

Now we need an extra inverter between J28 pin3 (inverter input) and J25 pin3 (inverter output). This is necessary to provide an inverted data signal to the DAC module connected to J5

--- first some information about pin numbering ---

SN74HC04 could be used for this, SN74HC04 pin numbering, notch to the top, top view:

pin top left is pin1, next one down is pin 2, and so on, until pin 7 (bottom left)
pin8 (bottom right), next one up is pin9 and so on, until pin 14 (top right).

Similar applies for SAA7220 socket,
pin1 top left, pin12 bottom left, pin 13 bottom right, pin24 top right.

ADDING THE INVERTER:

> Connect GND (SAA7220 socket pin 12) to the following pins of the SN74HC04: pin3, pin5, pin7, pin9, pin11, and pin13.

> Connect VCC (SAA7220 socket pin24) to SN74HC04 pin 14.

> Solder a 100nF decoupling capacitor between SN74HC04 pin7 and pin14.

> Connect pin1 of SN74HC04 to pin3 of J28 (DATA).

> Connect pin2 of SN74HC04 to pin3 of J25 (Inverted DATA).

This mod should place the DAC in NOS mode with minimum cost (only a SN74HC00 and a 100nF decoupling cap required).

Hope this helps,

John

Hi John. How nice it is to see you on this thread helping out with Thomas dac.
I do not know if it may help, but diagrams can be found in posts: 308, 309, 310,311. I beleive the information is repeated in posts: 1043, 1045,1046, 1047, 1048, 1049, 1051 and 1053.
The balanced dac is also included.

For settings now. You could see posts:422, 534, 689, 826 and see Stevox's settings in post 961. There is also Julien M, I beleive, who published settings, but I can not find his post. They are the ones I use.
I tried all these settings in the beginning, but personnaly I prefer the original ones with 4x oversampling, digital filter and reclock.
I have been using this dac since I got it, with passive i/v and my tube amplifier, that I largely modify since. We have to use different power supply for the digital and the audio sections, otherwise the noise is bad.
It is a very good dac after all. This is my prefered one so far while I am watching your progresses with the D4.

Hi Jean-Charles, about the power supply. Do you mean have two separate power supply, one for the digital and another for audio? Can you tell & show us what you have done.

:D [/B]

Hi Sam L,
I will send you back first to post 952, 965 page 39 of this thread.
Then look post 1000 page 40, also posts 1102, 1108 on page 45.
The next pages could be of interest too.
You have the essential of the discussion concerning the noise problem, with causes and cures.
I largely upgraded the tube section since then and I am still using it today.

Hi All,

Is any one know what wrong with thomas, look like he have long time not logon to the furom, the last post was on may 2008.

Hi ecdesign,

I anm looking for a set of TDA1541A pallarel DAC kit Set, Are you selling any?

Thanks
Eddy Lim

If you are interested I could sell you one of mine. It is an upgraded single ended. In case just email me. Bye.
