Hi,

another update is available on the gallery .

This time, the freehand cut of the tweeter recess is covered. The crossover assembly and my plan for the woofer cut is also pictured and commented there.

For those of you in the southern USA and below, you have a bonus picture of what a foot of snow over a night looks like... :)

Thanks,

Dino

Greets,

A small bump for those of you still following my project. It goes slower than expected... but winter is here for real : I have to go outside again to cut the hole for all six drivers. It's always too cold when I have some free time for it...

Anyway, the picture gallery now contains some picture of a technique I called the 'turn-around-the-nail' cut. It's perfect for recess cut. I have to say that the result is impressive.

I now have everything in hands, including the vinyl laminate and the rust-o-leum black paint for the baffle. I tried it yesterday on the back and, well, it stinks even today ! I'll have to way for a sunny day because I won't try it again inside...

See you later,

Dino

Hi Scott_fx,

I can't wait too to hear these speakers sing ! I'll probably paint the back of the second enclosure tonight, and I'll put the vinyl laminate on one or both cabinet. I should take photos of these steps. I'll post them later this weekend.

I tried the crossovers a couple of days ago : a small test is always a good idea before closing everything ! Even with the tweeter right on the table and both DA175 in their boxes, it was pure pleasure !

Regards,

Dino

Hi,

Another update of my project. I haven't give up, it's only longer than I was thinking at first... finishing is a long, not that easy and not that fun step of speaker building ! Mistakes tends to become more apparant at this stage of the process... you just can't hide them ! :)

Anyway, the project is close to an end. Baffles are painted, vinyl is applied on the enclosure. The final assembly can take place !

As always, you can follow the project in pictures here .

Regards,

Dino

Finally, this pair of speaker is done. And what a design !

I have to say that I'm 100% satisifed so far... but my audio experience is quite limited. Beside listening to some High end commercial speakers (B&W and others), it's my first real contact with Hi-Fi speakers.

My first impression is simple : i just can't believe I've built them ! The bass, mids and highs hit me right in the face.... nothing sounds too much, you can't say if the bass or the highs are too strong. The music coming out of them is as the frequency response graph : perfect ! And to me, the most impressive improvement over what I had before is for the voices. I finally understand what people says, without getting too much low and high frequencies !

Thanks to all of you who followed this project.

Don't hesitate to drop me an email if you have any questions. You can reah me at dino.barnabe*at*uquebec.ca

I've been busy building my sealed BAMTM and currently routing the speaker holes. Trying to follow Zaph's directions as close as possible, except for the round-over exterior baffle edge. I just wasn't sure if I could bend the teak veneer without messing things up. The teak veneer looks amazing and much better in person.

Gollum, your BAMTMs look great and have quickened my build! :)

The enclosure is MDF and to built to Zaph's drawings. I didn't want to change anything from the original design, but when I started the front baffle, I was talked out of trying to veneer a 3/4” round corner. I wanted a teak front so I decided to so with straight corners.

My idea is to build one sealed BAMTM and try it out and see if it will work as a good center channel. Then either build another sealed or 2 vented, I have everything to build 3 enough speakers, crossover components, veneer, and MDF to complete BAMTMs, vented or sealed.

I have a bunch of photos, if people are interested.

Real wood veneer is *way* better than any vinyl laminate you can find. It will always looks less... DIY !

But I'm really curious to know where you've found a veneer sheet that large. It's pretty easy to fing long and narrow veneer, but the one you used seems to cover over 12'' large.

About the roundover, all I can do is to quote Zaph :

All of my designs call for roundovers on the baffle. 1/2" is the minimum, but 3/4" is better if you have a large shank, variable speed router than can handle it. The roundover is required to help smooth out the diffraction ripple response.

I'm not even sure I can hear any difference myself, but that's what Zaph says about it.

If you have any other pictures, drop them here ! I want to see how you'll finish the veneer... natural of you'll add color to it ?

Good job !

Dino

There's a great wood store near by Owl Lumber and they have 4'x8' sheets of teak. I've seen many exotic 4'x8' veneers online, but I wanted to make sure of the quality and grain.

I debated on the roundover for days and even tried a small sample roundover. Since it was my 1st veneering project, i didn't want to risk the cabinets. I hope the lack of roundover doesn't effect the sound...

I plan to use only a teak oil for a finish. Other wise the extra expense of the teak would be a waste.

Here's a shot of the 4'x8' teak veneer and right before I apply one of the side sheets. You can see contact cement on both surfaces.

I won't ask you how much you paid the 4'x8' sheet of teak... it's probably way over my budget ! :)

Are you happy with the result ? I'm not a specialist with veneer, but how hard is it to glue it with contact cement ? Nothing to complain about, the result is perfect ? Would you change something in the way you made it ? Share your experience about veneering.

I'm pretty sure that, without the roundover, there will be an impact on sound. But I'm 100% sure too I won't have glued veneer on such a roundover without reading many forums and asking alot of questions ! Maybe can you try it for us on a leftover part :)
