Ian,

Thanks for sharing your experience. Did you also build a Modulus-86 amp a while back, or am I mistaken there? If yes, how does the Eikona sound with the Mod-86?

Also if I may ask, what genres have you tried with these speakers? Any of the heavier rock/metal genres?

Yes, I did build the Modulus 86 - great amp. Unfortunately I managed to blow one of the boards when I was converting to monoblocks so decided electronics is not for me. :( I'm OK with speakers and turntables so will stick to these mainly mechanical systems. In any case I'm not sure Tom would advise running a 3 ohm speaker from the Mod-86 although I suppose you could connect the twin drivers in series and have a more benign 12 ohm load.
As to music, I'm not into heavy rock but do like a bit of Massive Attack now and then :) Tracks such as Angel sound superb, it is quite a complex track but the twin Eikonas separate out the components very well so no muddle at all. Other electronic stuff like the XX also sound superb, in fact any well recorded music sounds excellent. The drum on Hotel California from the Eagles Hell Freezes Over has a real thwack but also lots of reverb and texture so other than the deepest of bass notes I don't think much is missing here.

An opportunity to buy another pair of nearly new Eikonas led me to build these.

Could you post a close-up of that turntable please.

very interesting looking driver and also the wall-mounted-with-reflector speaker concept.

Not sure how one compares this Eikona driver with a 10.3 given that you can buy a 10.3 for $85 (Madisound price today) and the Eikona comes in at GBP333/ pair. I haven't heard the Eikona, but I didn't find the 10.3 wanting for much.

The Eikonas in UK are nearer £400 a pair! But, as your strapline says

"The test of the machine is the satisfaction it gives you. There isn't any other test.

Having used both the Eikonas give that extra satisfaction making the price difference worthwhile but others might disagree, I'm simply expressing my experience and impressions.

Are the cones still made by Lowther?

No EJ Jordan cones have ever been made by Lowther, whose speciality is paper cones. Our cones are a very specific design by Ted Jordan. They are manufactured by a specialist in the UK and final assembly is by ScanSpeak.

There was a brief consultation period with Lowther but no Jordan product came out of it. The Eikona 1 was UK-made but the manufacturer was unable to keep up with demand, so the move was made to Scanspeak.

For Bill Poster from Reply #133 in this thread:

I have not built a prototype MLTL for the Eikona 2. But I have run simulations for the Eikona 2 so I'm confident that the actual results will mirror my modelling. It is likely that several DIYAudio readers have built MLTLs based upon my work as these efforts date from 3 years ago.

See my discussion in Reply #2 within this thread for links to my MLTL modelling for the Eikona 2 and Alpair 10.3 drivers.

For these designs I used Martin King's simulation models so I feel very confident that these two drivers yield outstanding results. I have constructed successful MLTL prototypes for several different Alpair drivers, much earlier the Jordan Jx92S, and several other drivers as referenced herein DIYAudio. The source of all of these designs were from Martin's work so I'm sure that my Eikona 2 simulation work would yield successful results as well.

Maybe comparing then to the MAOP 10.2 (or 10.3 if it exists) would be a fairer. They are close to £600/pair in the UK.

jeff

That's gettin pricey, Id really want to hear something before buying if I was to pay 600 quid.

regardless, its great having more choices of excellent drivers.

Indeed!

Did you get a chance to hear those wall mounted speakers with curved reflectors? - this looks quite fascinating to me with loadsof DIY experimenting options for anyone who fancies bending up some hardboard.
