Those chips went out of production a long time ago. You are right though, you are better of getting a dead player and recovering known genuine chips.
My CS receiver also just gave up in my analogue metric kit. I'd say it was likely that all 3 chips were suspect.

I cannot answer this, all I can say is mine gave up for no reason and they have also out of production for some time.

To me the datecode/batch seems ok, just the typeface is very very clean. I have some other tda's, all with a more fuzzy print than this.
Also to be seen on fleabay (i bought it from a dutch seller though):

If I understand this thread correctly the two digits after for example "HSH"
is a datecode?
Which makes wonder when I see a TDA1541A marked:
TDA1541A
11189
HSH0815 2
Or are they back in production as I've seen in some posts?
That chip will work I have seen 2004 dated chips and 2008 chips and they all worked .
It is a pretty elaborate fake for them to be pin identical to the TDA1541A and also sound and function like one .
As has been mentioned by quite a few in the know on this forum the TDA1541A is still bizarrely enough still in limited production .

I'm not in the know, but I guess there could be a limited production for spares?
Anyhow I did choose to go the safer path and got a few used TDA1541A SAA7220P/B cd-players/mainboards.
Ok... So what's the worst that can happen if I just plug this chip in my board?
