Mr.Fujita says that the volume is to control the input level of the amp, and the gain control is to control the gain, and these are two different things.
But in TU-8550, these 2 controllers are combined by this quadral volume.

2 for right and left volume control, and another 2 for right and left gain control
it is to diminish the residual noise even when the sound volume is low.
