Hi Greets back

I generally dislike unions as well..well not the unions but the type of people that seem to head them. And I hate cops/teachers/nurses/public servants striking.

I'd love to have someone explain to me though how you can tell a businessman (that is what the truckers appear to be since they pay for the trucks and their maintenance) that he can't raise his asking price? In other words...what is the point?

included free baffle on first 100

I notice the first one hundred pairs will include a machined baffle with magnetic grills. They look great, but I wonder what use they are...

Given most of us are looking at building TL designs... Is it appropriate (possible?) to correctly design/build for a segmented front baffle that won't impact the sound of the enclosure? I'm thinking roundover edges on the included baffle, butt jointed (with a block of wood glued on the back side to act as a 'seal' - possibly with the included baffle finished in black and the remainder of the speaker in veneer?

Looking forward to the ideas of others to not have to trash such a great looking 'bonus' item.

next thing is that I was all set to order a pair of these but I see that there is delay due to some port strike ? is this still the case or is the july 1st date ready to go ?

This is BC... BC has a bit of a socialist streak. Typically when this sort of thing happens the government lets it brew for a bit, and then steps in and puts them back to work.

I do not expect the strike to last more than a week... so after the holiday weekend i'd be surprised if it isn't cleared up.

My stand on this is that the government can give these guys a break on the taxes on fuel (they are making big royalties on gas & oil -- huge enuff that there is no way to stop the looming offshore oil minimg (of which, with very strict environmental standards, i am in favour of)).

A continuing rise in fuel prices i also view as a good thing... painful in the short term, but it lights a fire under alternate energy, pushes for fuel efficiency everywhere, and breaks us out of a lull fueled by cheap oil.

I was talking to Bas about it -- here we pay a loon a litre (~ 0.67 euro, he is paying 1.40 + for that litre of fuel). Gas is still cheaper than milk, even bottled water, and most of it is taxes fueling our governments.

Anything bigger than 10 litres doesn't gain you much... attached are sims with (IIRC) about 2.5 litres (Q=1.1), 8.something litres (Q=7.07) and 20 litres.

With this i decided that something like 4 litres aperiodic would make a great small box to mate with sub(s).

Attached is my idea of the little aperiodic. The beauty of a box this small is that there is a lot of flexibility in the shape (as long as you can fit the driver in). As drawn it is intended to have an agreesive roundover (otherwise i would build it with 1/2' and gain a reduction in dimensions of a 1/2" all round). Of course this shape does nothing for the bonus baffles (IMHO opion these are worth having just to find out how well the self-centreing works, even if you don't use them :D)

Noe if you were to make a sealed box with the baffle as the entire front, it would need to be 2,5"/65 mm deep with 1/2" material for a 3 litre box, up to 13"/330 mm deep for a 10 litre box with 3/4" material (gross internal volumes with iinternal depth)

It is also easy to fit the official 7 litre vented box into that sceme...

The plans are too big to attach here, so that is the impetis to get the planet_10 HiFi Box Design Library web page going.

http://www.planet10-hifi.com/boxes.html

You will note lots of placeholders, some of these are drawn already but need detailing, some are just planned. I also will need to get official permission to put up some of them (GM, Tim)

If anyone has suggestions for popular designs that need clarification....

Note: Tim's WR125-based Ling's just got a good review at Positive Feedback. This design is similar to the 7 Litre BR

why the 'high' vent

Dave - why the 'high' placement of the port on the 7 liter design?

Given what I've seen you say about use of physical bracing of the driver using a rear directed 'post' between the magnet and rear baffle, wouldn't the design be better served with such an addition and movement of the port below the horizontal brace?

How about OB? Is it suited for OB, and where would you cross over to the woofer in something like a mini-Zilla?

Should work very well, Q is highish, distortion in low. Limited by the volume displacement in the bottom, so the helper woofer would be a must have at anything above moderate levels.

I'll be bringing a couple to Calgary to show off ...

Well, now I've listened to the FR125S in two different cabinets. Firstly, for a week in a solid pine transmission line type; and secondly, just today, in a Baltic Birch back-horn (the design of this back-horn is a new design). I am surprised that the driver in the back-horn did not produce a midbass hump (such as has been my experience with the Jordan jx92s or a Tang-Band 4-657s)--but then again, the box is a bit different than my previously built little zHorn Dakini etc. When these cabinets are dressed (I mean sanded and shellaced), I'll post a page with pictures.

But, about the FR125S drivers in comparison with the Jordan JX92S (why do they both end with an "S"?), they seem comparable, but certainly different. For a couple years, the Jordan's have been my daily portal to symphonic music; and the FR125S are the first new drivers in this time to keep my attention (not make me want to hurry and get the Jordan's back in the system) and I've played with some Fostex and a Yamamura twizzered mod Bandor 6 incher of late. What the FR125S does is convey the emotion of a performance so very well--the dynamic nuances!!!--, so well in fact, that I'm listening afresh to my well worn faves and newly enchanted by their spells. I feel the music more. The FR125S are more laid-back (which is fine with me), require more amp juice, and have yet to be as open (though seem as smooth) in comparison to the Jordan's. Time (burn-in) will tell.

The only amp I've been using has been a gainclone (I've three such amps and presently no tube or other type amp).

Hi

I am very curious to hear how these drivers will perform with various Pass DIY amplifiers. I mean, it would be nice if someone (Nelson perhaps?;) could test these with various ZEN amps.

If I remeber correctly, Nelson said somewhere that Jordan sounds good with zen lite. Now, the question is, how would the CCS FR125S sound with ZEN (lite). Or SOZ? Or F1?

While testing, there was only an assumption that this speaker does not sound well with tube amps because of their highish ouput impedance.

But so far it seems that no one tested the FR125S with Nelson's F1....

regards,

Vix
