And what did we buy today?

Canvas print. I need to frame it next.

First off they were 70 cents each, and they are the best compromise that I have found, but I will still probably need to test a bunch to find some good ones that are reasonably well matched.

I have a few ideas that require a small, low powered, low heat amplifier stage.

Anything with a cathode starts at about 1 watt just for the heater, and that goes up quickly. A 6AK5 will work at just over a watt heater + plate power but several of them in one small space is out of the question.

The tiny DH tubes tend to be microphonic, but can run on 20 to 80 milliwatts each. These seem to be the best cheap, low power, tiny tube that I have tested so far.

Immediate plans are for a guitar preamp that goes inside the guitar. I need 6 of them, one for each string. The piezo pickups are actually the string saddles in the bridge.

I have also been working on a modular synthesizer, and I would like to build a Moog style ladder filter using tubes. It would need to be small and consume minimal power to fit into the Eurorack format. It also needs to coexist with some vintage VCO circuitry which is especially sensitive to heat.

Boot fair bargain!

Today I picked up:
Rotel RC-960BX
Rotel RB-960BX
Rotel RCD-965BX
Kenwood KT-2080 Tuner

All for £20 ! :D

Not tested yet, but they all pass the power-on/smoke test

Thinking to swap out the insides in the pre-amp with the Mezmerize B1 buffer I have on order.
I'd welcome any suggestions with what to do with the RB-960BX power amp, I would like to perform similar board swap, keeping the same transformers (2 transformers with 2 x 35v output I believe).

Thanks,
geoff.

I just found this thread, so I actually bought on Saturday a pair of Altec Model 17 clones. The 604-8Gs and attenuator are late model, I'm thinking late 1970's. The cabinets have walnut veneer and cloth grills in pretty good shape.

I'm currently sourcing parts for Markwart's upgraded crossover design. :)

Do yourself a BIG favor and BI-AMP those beautiful old Altecs!!!

Interesting you should suggest that. I pulled out the stock attenuator and bi-amped using my ashley crossover, a FirstWatt J2 on the CD and an HCA 1500A on the woofer. It was like night and day! I can't wait to finish my VFET kit to replace the 1500A.

I had to undo everything Monday so as not to have a bunch of wires hanging out for my dog to trip on. He's 15, wobbly and almost blind. I'd already ordered my parts for the crossover so I have to decide whether to return them.
