HLCM - Horn loaded compact monitor

Pcgab,
Seems we are on rather similar boats: WAF being a concern with large horns, willingness to build something in wood, and our desired range for the mids (I'm ok ending at 2.2kHz though). I think I'm less experienced than you, but been doing some research and want to offer my short list so far:

M200 as driver, either on a JBL 2386 or Seos 24 or 30.

JBL 2386: Pooh likes it and has measured it, and he recommends a minimum xo of 700Hz. As I don't listen at very high SPL I'm thinking I might be able to go a bit lower.

Seos 24: user Face uses this horn with a BMS coaxial driver from 450Hz up and is very happy with it. From his measurements, the Seos 24 doesn't quite load much at 450Hz, but Face says if SPL is not very high it works well for him. This horn has about twice the mouth size of the 2386, and about 60% of its length.

Seos 30: no references, but I assume it would load further down as it's 70% larger than the Seos 24, at the expense of a much bigger horn hence higher WAF cost.

What's your take on these?

I've no real experience with those combos. However I am seriously considering a pair of M200's.

I'm fairly certain I'm going to synergy route, at least for the time being. That being said, I do have a habit of buying, trying, and stashing horns and drivers I like. Saving for a 'rainy' day :D

Hi Pooh,

Id like to try the M200 in a 200hz rectangular tractrix horn. I see quite a few of these units second hand. Is there much risk buying these used? Anything to look out for?

The diaphragms must be centered perfectly. When they are on the unit to unit consistency is insanely good. If out of alignment they can be all over the map and more than likely need a new diaphragm. If you can get the seller to do a frequency and impedance sweep on the pair you'll be safe. Maybe give them an an extra 20 bucks - I doubt if they will be usable below around 500 Hz in 200 tractrix. In my 180's that's as low as the wanna load.

Okay thanks. My other option is to use a cone midrange that i can cross at around 350hz to the 8pe21 midbass horn. I have ordered a 4" celestion sealed midrange to test and might try the faital pro 5" unit that people like.

Do you think a cone mid of 4-5" will work well in a 2" throat to a 1.7k crossover?

i'm listening to a 4 inch 2 inch exit compression driver crossed in at 500 hz to 2.2k and don't have cone here that can beat it. the magic of the horn loaded 8pe21 is it can be used anywhere up to 8-900 hz with virtually no compromise so it is really adaptive to any good upper mid horn solution. i went back to the 8pe21 it's really great in my horns. the little faital 5 inch should cover that range well with low distortion

With that slight rise it could be really great in a hypex or expo horn but probably not the best with the tractrix. I find tractrix horns tend to follow that same curve - than they have the narrowing off axis response along with it that makes them difficult to integrate with other horns and still get even (constant radiation) sound. I'd love to have a pair of these.

Hey Pooh.

How low are you crossing over (lower xo) the 8pe21? Where you using a b&c 12" and now went back to the 8"?

i;m using the selenium d405ti - actually made for gibson guitar co - in the community 90 degree big radial horns. i think the flare rate is 220 hz :)

How do you like the D405Ti vs the M200? Always thinking under 2.5kHz. It looks interesting on paper, and I see it was measured in the JBL specs with Selenium HL4750-SLF horn, which is relatively small at under 20" width, and seems OK for crossing at 500Hz.
