What is it you are pondering Jaap? Philips branded tube types are often made in Mullard factories and they often made tubes for eachother. Amperex and Joint Army Navy (JAN) to. They also use same codes to batch/type track them.

Yesterday I first tested out the best pair of 6n6p for George and after that i started to change the sockets on the test rig from octal to the miniature button 7-pin.

Well, so far I understood Philips did not produce octal socket tubes in Holland. Abroad is another story. Also, the Miniwatt designation used without the brand name Philips is new to me. I expect them to be foreign made, despite what the silk says. But it's no big deal ;)

Are you testing 7-pin trioded penthodes?

Yea, breaking in a pair of 6aq5. One of them did some coffing in startup and microphony seems to be medium high in this pair. Can hear clapping near tubes but no biggie. Definately very musical and a tad more detailed then the 6g6g pair. Foot starting tapping instantly, usually good sign;). Would recommend you to test. Had only a few at home but hordes on the boat.

Salas I think I sent you a socketed pair some day? Tryem you might likem;)

I can also say that the difference between having the preamp with the best 6v6/6n6p/6g6g/6aq5 and not usung any pre at all is a tad more dist, a tad less detail (crappy comps and implementation, two pots etc) but on the plus side it gives the sound a nice little oomph touch.

How much line gain you got in total? Feeding from an audio source or from another line preamp?

Not much since I dont need it. My standard EL84pp with dynaco z565 irons clips at a little over consumer line level so Asio from a pro souncard keps me between 9 oclock ambient and 1-2 to high for neighbours.

Its tedious to switch sockets, took me a good half hour to do a quick and dirty. Would like to test AL4 also but new sockets and new filament... Nah not now.

Started to make adapters but... Tedious.

Heres an opened up RCA btw for a look at the grids.
