Power Supply Soft Start Board (V3)

Wiring another transformer to soft start

Hi All, Advice on auxilliary transformer - I am going to use the soft start and speakers protector boards for my Honey badger project but the transformers i am using to power the amp do not have lower voltage secondary, so can just I attach another transformer (12v) to the output of the soft start this was just to power the speaker protector board.

It is better to connect the auxiliary transformer before the soft start and after it's own fuse. The main transformer fuse and the plug top fuse are far too big to protect the user from damage, if the auxiliary transformer fails. A 500mA fuse allows small auxiliary transformers up to a total 40VA to start without blowing that fuse.

The reason being that the auxiliary will output a low voltage while the soft start is not bypassed and this may affect the operation of the auxiliary circuits during the start up phase.

one can usually hear the delayed click of the bypass relay pulling in.

If you increase the delay, the difference in time from switching ON to Click will be more obvious.

A soft start only needs a few cycles of the mains frequency to get the transformer core in sync with the mains current. Maybe less than 50ms, but we see a recommended 100ms to 300ms as a suitable bypass delay.
