Reference DAC Module - Discrete R-2R Sign Magnitude 24 bit 384 KHz

I had the same impression : much better with higher resolution material !

Without headphone, do some members have the same hole in the middle between the speakers ? Like if the speakers were toe towards the exterior (not in: towards the listener) ?
Sorry to re ask ? I had no answer about that, I called this "phase" but have not technical knowledge about this (it's certainly not the good word) but I have not this strange stage presentation with my others dacs and cd players : e.g. voice is not centrer but divided in each speakers comming from the laterral walls !!!! (not nice)

Is there any opinion about that ? Jut at home ? Could it be the actual digital filter and a revision couls solve that ?

Soren ? (I believe you can hear that with a headphone, but if you can test on your floorstanders please, I would appreciate your return about that please)
kind regards
Eldam

If it shows rev F.F, then the FPGA image is not downloaded correctly. The uManager should always work, even with incorrect FPGA image.

The image get downloaded directly to the FPGA Flash, it's not like it get loaded afterwards.... I'm using the same source code as for my line of embedded computers, so it should be ok.

I'm using HyperTerminal on Windows, that I never had any problems with.

The fact is that now I'm stuck with a board that will not lock to my SBT source
(LED keeps on flashing) and thus it won't play any music on the I2S input.
My SBT can still see the Amanero though.

When trying to connect to the board with PuTTy, the status bar says 'Connected' but when typing +++ in order to start the uManager, the '+++' is echoed on the screen, but the uManager is not starting up. So naturtally I can't flash any firmware.

Help, please!

Hi All,

Thanks for your comments and suggestions so far.

Attached are the print screens of the interface board (top and bottom sides) that I would like to submit for your additional checks and comments.

I added the LDO 3,3 V for the Toslink connector in the bottom side of the board. The +5 V are to be supplied by the dedicate connector. Adding the dedicated LDO to the Toslink connector I think that the 47 uH is not more required and I remove it but I am not an expertise about the Toslink, so please correct me if I am wrong.

I move the U.FL connectors in the bottom side of the board to have the traces as short as possible and in same time to have the room to properly connect the U.FL cables.

I added the connector for the POT

I added the pads for the balanced input transformer and the relevant pads for the XLR connector. The connector is not in the board... sorry, too big.

I move the following in upper side of the board: the switch for the 2 SPDIF inputs, the LED and the inputs that I don't know for what they are required.

The board size now is 39 X 42 mm.

Any comment, correction, etc.. are welcome :).

Thanks and Regards,
Enrico

Enrico,

I like your project a lot. I would make just one suggestion in regards to the digital signal transformer. It would be great to make multipurpose and surface mount pads for it, that would allow usage of different transformers. Best in industry for this purpose are Scientific Conversions transformers used in all leading broadcast brands.

Scientific Conversion, Inc. - Transformers and Inductors

I will use SC947, see specs published. If interested I could help this group in obtaining the group buy. Audio Note transformer seems to be easy to mount in any position as long as there are holes, so that will leave everyone a choice.

Truth to be told, not that it matters much since there is FIFO on the board, but still why not do it the best we can.

Comparative jitter measures.
Buffalo DAC with Amanero, Weiliang DAC with XMOS Weiliang, Dam1021 2% with Amanero.

The measures are the minimum noise on my Motu Ultralite MK3 . The Dam1021 probably better measure.

I used single transformer. Dam1021 has very good Power suply. In my opinion no need construction of external power for improvement.

Have better fase jitter. I think the digital filter is very bad.

Upsamplers and ringing

So the DAC seems to sound better with 44.1 when it is upsampled.

Next week I'm back home and I can start with this nice DAC :)
In the meantime I did some research about resamplers and filters:

Here's an interesting article at soundcheck site about resamplers and ringing artifacts.

One of the best resamplers is SoX, it's open source and also available as plugin for foobar.

Danny

Hello TNT.
1-500 Hz. And more interesting 20-6000 Hz. logarithmic.

Sorry. I can´t explain. For me is difficult to write in English. I use translate.google.es.

1-500 is no important in this DAC. No have problems. The Dam1021 is perfect. Very well manufactured isolated mass. No ground problems. Perfectly filtered 50 Hz.

The Buffalo DAC hum is because I have Ground problems in my DAC made. I touch the wiring and the noise changes for the better or worse. It's very low level that does not affect sound quality. :>)) Is very difficult for me to resolve. I have a lot of wiring on the case. Preamplifier, DAC, Salas power, etc.
The important to see is Jitter measure J-Test. I can see a Filter problem. The filter is Bad. And it may not sound good at this moment.
