Reference DAC Module - Discrete R-2R Sign Magnitude 24 bit 384 KHz

Yes, but supplying the USB>I2S board from the computer's USB VBUS really sucks! My personal DAC has multiple, choke-filtered power supplies in it (though they are perhaps not as isolated from one another as I would now like).

So I don't care whether the USB board gets its power from a discrete PS inside the DAC box (can still be galvanically isolated), or from a power "injector" USB cable device--just don't feed it the crap from your computer.

Would you find the USB power from a Squeezebox just as "dirty"?

More info:

I don't do the actual order processing and shipping, the two online stores handle that. And if you entered the email address correctly, you usually get tracking emails from UPS. But it will take a couple of days to get everything shipped, and the US store won't be able to ship until Monday as the boards need to get there....

This is what I did.

Is there any interest to some surgery on the USB cable to cut the the power and gnd return path (same wire Gnd that the signal return path?) when using external power supply to Amareno. In this case,we could keep the LDO which output drop is 3.3V and use a 5V before (any vias near the entry LDO volatge Pins or direct from the USB voltage pin ?

So double isolation if USB pcb : one for the PCB and the Soekris one ? Soren said the embeded isolation of the DAC should suffice ! More is better. My heart is balancing between a cheaper Amareno for that and a more sota one with isolation but longer to get ! As the isolation on an USB is at it output what could be the utility as the DAC has one at its entry ?

But I really ask myself because testimonials on the other thread (implementation) if a USB at 32/384 is better than a 24/44 TCPIP to SPIDF streamer ? Ok one said there is an isolator and recloking in the DAC boards ! But TCPIP and SPIDF are bit perfect in their transmission ! Does the streamed flux from the computer can be corrupted because the noise of the PC with a too Noisy USB pcb streamer ? Async USB does solve some problems in relation with the PC already, no ?

Sorry for the two cents questions

I don't think you can cut the USB ground wire. USB requires impedance control for the entire signal path, and you need the ground to control the wire impedance. This would be the shield ground, but the shield ground will be tied to the PC ground which then gets tied to the Amanero ground.

For 5V, there are ready made USB power injector adapters, that allow you to add external 5VDC to a USB cable. I have a couple that I was playing with before.

But, I was just reading a thread at audiocircle about a guy who reported good results by modding a USB cable to seperate out the power/ground lines from the signal lines.

As for USB versus SPDIF, IMHO nothing is perfect, and you need to pick your poison :). I'm going usb, but I also have a heavily modded pc to generate the usb output.

This is what I did.

From your previous post, I thought you were feeding the Amanero 3.3V, but in that pic it seems you are feeding it 5V, and left the 5V to 3.3V converter in place to generate 3.3V.

I verified last night that I need 5V connected to my USB card, or my PC doesn't see my Amanero/DAC. Once I connect 5V, everything is good.

I use a modified Silverstone EC04-P PCIE to USB card. The mod is to feed it 3.3V from a dedicated linear PS, instead of using 3.3V from the motherboard.
I connect 5V to a molex connector on the Silverstone card.

Also, my Amanero has the 5 to 3.3V convertor removed, and it gets 3.3VDC from my DAC.

afaik i think pc gnd is needed
usb a and b plugs are available on eBay its relatively easy to make your own cable without +5v
but the external +5v usb cable mod has good effect

id be curious to know what the ec04 usb card needs 5v for randy
its not required for my ec01's with/without the clock mod

Unboxing Experience...

... the movie :)

edit: ok - movie not possible here but I got it and it looks very good.

Yes, I exactly thinked about this separate wire. Some are selling it at a ridiculous high price like IFI (from AMR ?) but raw usb plugs are easy to source nowadays !

I have a non heavily (non)moded Synology NAS ! very embarassed between choosing the Synology with its usb through an Amareno and stay with a 24/44 SB Duet through its spidf... well I have some 96 Khz and more but few, so it's more a choice on how each protocol is managed by the DAC itself ! does the internal spidf to I2S maid by the DAC could be as good than receiving I2S already ?

Soren, please, have you tried both with your DIYinkh & Amareno but tried also a good SPIDF streamer ? No difference heard by you with your headphones ? Same Same but different ? I bet an answer : as jitter + isolator, this is the same ? bu the extra operation to convert inside spidf to I2S !

Amareno is an extra 70 euros + eventually more if external voltage PS is choosed over USB voltage !

Here's a good usb cable tutorial

I spiral my signal wires and ground wire around a cotton rope or Teflon tube at 1cm spacing
