Sound Quality Vs. Measurements

Says the guy who thinks his 22.00 PC speakers and u-boob music videos is Hi-Fi
Try and get the story straight, it does help your argument ... I have done quite a bit of subtle tweaking of my setup, this makes a big, big difference - if I didn't do that of course the sound would be pretty rubbishy. I also do have a pair of Altec Lansing PC monitors here, but they're pretty rubbishy in comparison to the Harmans, in raw form, even though nominally they're more "powerful" - so I haven't bothered trying to modify them.

And, I never use YouTube videos straight, except to check them out - if there is something of interest I extract the audio and convert to uncompressed, WAV format. This is equivalent to downloading a slightly degraded WAV format file, and playing it in the "correct" fashion.

Isn't Paul still into DSD rather heavily having just introduced a DAC which converts it all into DSD? He won't fix his HF problems going that route.......

Speaking of HF problems - I note over on WBF that Adam lent his Trinity out and that led to an 8month old Vivaldi being put up for sale :D :D

I cant comment on his DAC or DSD leanings don't know enuff about what he is doing there . Large SOTA speakers will change your perspective on things alot, expect more revelations from him in the future ...

No dCS affiliation or love here , so good for him .... :)

Read thru: http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/digital-line-level/249411-trinity-dac-discussion.html

No biggie for me I'm allergic to expensive digital currently , as long as the analog moves me I'm happy , same with my current 2K "budget" Rega CD player have no interest at the moment to step up until I'm ready to make the plunge to server/ software only Digital.

@Frank - you definitely said 'What you said...' not 'What you believe...'.
Sorry, I'm not following the subtleties of this "argument" here ...

My postion is that one should be able to do a pure class A, a classic AB, and a class D amp, and they will be indistinguishable in listening tests. If they are, then there is a problem in the implementation: in the chip, in the design, in the layout, in the power supply, in the resistance to interference, somewhere - there is nothing "special" about the means to the end, only in how well it has been done ...

I think he meant to say 'enuff classD' but this ain't nonsense because he's talking about the implementations which he's come across which aren't perfect ones.
The implementations don't have to be 'perfect' - I was pleasantly surprised to find that the Aldi TV, using its intrinsic class D amps - proudly stated as such in the manual, and tiddly speakers, was capable of producing very clean treble sound if I went about conditioning it well beforehand, and had other tweaking in place. Easily able to do a soaring violin solo with all the tonal qualities intact, I didn't see any problems of "untidy" top end ...

How are you going to test your hypothesis? I don't believe its testable because all implementations of the PSU will have some weakness...
For myself, if I do sufficient short term tweaking on class AB, and class D, then I get the flags up for achieving my standard of sound. Class A I don't see a problem with, it's got most of the issues under control by virtue of its intrinsic nature, but will require monster supples, if done conventionally.

In terms of doing a rigorous comparison it will probably be difficult to achieve complete matching of sound, but the goal would be that the topology could not be reliably identified: tick the box, is it class A, AB or D?

I recall hearing at least one of these CDs when I was in the biz, not sure I have it. Dallas Wind Symphony was it? My CD collection is rather out of hand now, in boxes around the place would take a while to see if I have it.

In general though I'm not the most impressed with RR, could just be their HDCD processing robbing me of 6dB dynamic range and for which I don't have a decoder. For a long time (before I got into highly optimized multibit DACs) their Rak Symphonic Dances was my goto recording, these days I prefer Decca's version with Ashkenazy conducting.
