Unconventional Techniques for Achieving Oustanding Stereo Imaging

My thoughts on this subject stem from some of Allison's research, lateral penna cues and a few hundred hours experimenting. What is problematic is that everyone's penna is different. What may work "nearly perfect" for you, likely will not work for anyone else due to this difference. Have also noticed that there is a level of 'mental fatigue' which causes changes in our perceived hearing. Morning vs Evening Enviromental exposure prior to listening tests, etc.

It's never wise to drive over and have a listen to some new fangled with the windows down ;)

Measurements in open baffle, small, very densely furnitured room with wooden floor and ceiling.
With "diffusorless" I mean there is no non-radiating element that is only there for guiding the sound.
The diaphragm is not prominent, with grille it would look like a conventional ceiling speaker.

Sorry!

The pictures show measurements at 0/15/30/45/60/75/90°. Mic distance is below 1 m. Gating is not easy in a small room because of the modal behaviour of the diaphragm (and ARTA says the number of samples is too small when I try.
Here is a measurement ~70° with a sheep fleece opposed to the driver.

I'll have to read a bit about that in the ARTA manual. But as the measurement with sheep fleece in 30 cm distance doesn't look that different to that without I don't expect significant differences when cancelling out the room.
Ordered a BMR for comparison (which is said to have an excellent dispersion characteristics).

I have the BMR running now.
The sound character is very cultivated, for long-term easy listening without fatigue.
The measurements show an excellent independence of the FR from listening direction, but with a soft decline from 2 kHz on and the top octave lacking.
On axis it produces weird spacial effects, with the sound coming mostly from below the speakers, but also can suddenly come from somewhere else. The image in flooder position (on ear-height) is more diffuse, but also much more stable and realistic (tests all in mono). IMHO the BMR is a driver where flooder setup is no "can", it's a "must". For typical ultra-low cost applications (computer gaming, pop music) it's probably too cultivated.
