Over the years, I have built several speakers, from two- to four way, as well as a subwoofer (with a Dynaudio 12) the size of a dryer. I am intrigued by the idea of making a sub-sat set-up with a full range driver, crossing in at 70 - 80Hz, in a small sealed box. I have a smallish room, listen to a wide range of music and occasionally like to go loud. I have two Brystom 3B amps. The Jordan JX92S looks interesting, but I was wondering what others should be on my short list. Thanks so much.

Hello John, welcome to the forum.
It depends how much you want to spend really. There are a few good alternatives to the Jordan that are worth considering, as the JX is getting a little long in the tooth.
The Fostex range has shrunk over the past few weeks, but the 4 1/2in FX120 and F120a are still available. The latter has the edge in performance, and the cache of a big AlNiCo motor, but as I mentioned elsewhere, the FX is IMO the canny choice of the two as it has most of the performance for half the price.
Then there is the Mark Audio range, of which three drivers come to mind: the Alpair 12 (6 1/2in cone), Alpair 10 (5 1/2in cone; basically the same size as the JX92S) and the Alpair 7 (4in cone).
There are also a handful of Tang Band drivers you might wish to investigate; their range is so wide, it's probably best if you trundle over to their website & have a look to see if anything grabs your attention. Probably a few others, but those are the units that immediately come to mind.

Well...
It seems that the only potentially viable candidates, TS-wise, are the Jordans, the Alpair 7s (which are pretty inefficient and don`t handle much power) and the Alpair 10s, which are discontinued, pending revision. Everything else seems to have a combo of high Fs and-or low Qts, and exceeding my F3 target.

I'm hoping to measure A7 today. We'll see how it compares in real life. The JX92 smeasured at 86 dB. For home use, the lack of any standards, makes power handling specs meaningless.
I wouldn't discount the CHR-70. I've been promised a comparison review of JX92 vrs CHR70eN soon (Nanook?)

Hi Dave,
Using the driver specifications, one can calculate excursion-limited power-handling and attendant SPL levels for a given frequency. For the Alpair 7, I am getting 80Hz power handling of about 5w and max SPL of about 91dB, which is a little lower than I was hoping for. The Jordan gets to about 96dB.
Any word on the TS specs for the new Alpair 10?

I believe that Mark is going to keep the A10 Mk 2 T/S specs as close to the Mk1 (even given new cone, suspension, dust cap...) that existing boxes work unchanged.

I'm itching to build something bigger for my main set, but I would like start with something smaller and easier to build. Propably back channel satellites or fronts for my second rig.
I accidentally purchased Aplair10FR a week ago. I was looking for Alpair6 drivers but the seller had a mistake in the add and I ended up buying 10s for price of one, lucky me
What I am looking for is small sealed or vented enclosure (<10 litres/0.35 cubic feet). I guess it not as small as OP is looking for, so sorry for the hijack again I went through MarkAudios website and several others too, but I found nothing that small for Alpair10FR drivers. I have been looking for software to model small enclosures for full range drivers but I'm having trouble finding one.
Any ideas or advices? I would be very thankful for help, as I said I'm eager to start cutting some MDF if I only could figure out the shape I am after

There is a primeSize miniOnken for the A10 -- nominal 13 litres.

edit: Scott was posting at the same time... on 1st blush i would have said the same thing Scott said about vented... but what we have here would be the basis of a dMar-Ken10 (deciSize miniOnken)

What would the outer dimensions look like? 20x25x30cm with 15mm panel thickness? About the structure, would that be more like mMar-Ken6 with bigger dimensions? it would be a lot easier for me to start my DIY career than the side vents of Mar-Ken10
This is true (the Jordan units are made in India) but I would assume Jordan will have their QC in place to ensure their brand is not sullied.

The dMar-Ken10 is going to be REALLY squat looking. Less so with ports on the bottom (or bottom & top).
the dMar-Ken7 & 70 are squat.
