Kemet ALC10S Slit Foil Capacitors - Any Good?

I need to give them a try...

With this thread inspiring me, I've just completed a Hafler XL280 power supply upgrade using the ALS10 in the 10000uF / 80V value, two per side. Since I was replacing the 30 year old original 7800uF caps I would think almost any cap would be an improvement but I'm experiencing much better bass extension and definition, and as I get more time on the amp it keeps improving. The XL280 is now my main 2 channel amp, until my DH500 gets upgraded. I'll probably use the ALS10 in that chassis too.

Talon, I am "tracking this"... am going to have to try the 2 pole Kemet.
~100.00 for 8 (2 mono amps, PS200s) I cannot go wrong.
*which chassis though?? ;)

I will "try them" next to the Mundorf MLytic AG and (4-pole) Jensens.
for the money, and the Kemet name, it should be really good.

another possible use... (Cyrus amp)

With this thread inspiring me.

A good thread (for me) as well.

I am feeling motivated...

like spending money,

LOLS!

I hear you, but I have to remind that ALC10S was recommended by many (for example in the UK based forum) for Cyrus and Naim recaps, and also Hypex used them in their power supplies:

I also have a Cyrus 1 in use, totally re-capped it, with exception to the slit-foils. (while they have not failed) I was struggling, but intent to leave them alone... I will order the Kemets (as "stash") till I figure out / get over replacing the remaining stock caps... as a component part, still very good design and technology. *replaced with Gold Tunes and MUSE N/P parts. It sounds awesome!

Thanks for the mentions jpk.

I would say you'll be happy with the choice. On that other project we discussed, I went with the CDE 382LX. As I mentioned, I wanted to stay on the JH track with the size, and there are no ALS10 at 22000 yet.

a good idea, excited to hear the results!

I am "not afraid" to try things, but as with the case you mention...
I (too) will always stay with a "tried / tested recipe", on first build(s)
with "new" parts. Excited to hear your experience(s) and feedback.
500 - 600s benefit from large(r) PS + + dual mono immensely.

I am about to complete an order, including 80v Kemet Slit Foils,
opting for the larger value, over the voltage rating...
I can run them up to 70 volts... having way more
80v parts... [correct] toroids and caps.

I get confused with whom, mentioned what???
Thanks all + others for leading the cause...

principle limitations (to 4 pole)

Thank you so much for sharing kptseng. Just the sort of information we need.
Now what I'd like to know is, how does a 4T compare to a 4T slit foil? I guess ultimately the question is, which one is the best of all 3?

I will speak up to my FAVORABLE 4 P experiences,
I believe this may apply to all of these great offerings.
Kemet 4 pole, Mundorf 4-pole or (discontinued) Jensen 4 pole

Based on extensive experience = nearly 10 years using the Jensen 4-poles,
among multiple amps, the DH 220, 230, 500. I am familiar with 4 P
I just rebuilt (into) 4 mono amps (repurposing the 16) I have...

*the main limitation(s) to them is in the higher cost,
the smaller value per cap (limited size offerings)
Almost impossible to point to point wire them,
so it is vital to have a board designed like the
Musical Concepts PS-200(4) or PS-500(8) to
wire them without a inductive "rats nest".

How did/do the 4-poles sound to me??? AMAZING!!!
Top end snap, clarity and neutrality - unique to J 4 P, likely others.
Slightly reduced bass, extension, body and sense of presence.
*I plan to use my J 4 P mono'd amps for bi-amping
on the top end... not using them on bass.

I am *very good at point to point, design, layout
and wiring. I would not hard wire with 4 poles...
*not bragging and not apologizing.

challenges of 4-pole installation

Hello Dr Ozark,
Can you elaborate more about your point about “would it hard wire with 4 poles”?

with 2 pins = an + input, an - input
with 4 pins = an + output, an - output

It would be challenging the orchestrate the wiring, and have it tidy,
and possibly be problematic for a stray noise stand point.
One concern is aesthetics, the other strictly sound related...

I ALWAYS use a film bypass on all electrolytics,
further complicating the matters at hand.

Board mounting 4-poles is the ONLY WAY TO GO.
