Weaker low-range response of 3-way speaker

seems like a simple baffle step and mid/tweet pad down issue?

Starting with that 8" woofer at 87 db sens, depending on how narrow your cabinet face is it is likely you will want to have the response cut down somewhere between 3 and 5 db by the time you get to about 400hz. This can be done with your woofer crossover by increasing the size of the inductor.
So if you do this then your system sensativity is now going to be only about 84db. This will mean that your HiVi mid and the planer tweeter will need to be padded down to match the rather low 84db sensitivity dictated by the woofer.
This means the mid will need to cut by about 2 db and the tweeter will need to be cut by about 10db!
And this is assuming only 3 db of baffle step! it may be you will need 4 or 5 db wich means you start with an even lower system sensativity and you will need to pad the mid and tweet even more.

Now in the end once you get everything taylored so it sound "right" you will have a rather low sensativity system and one with a different power response than the two way you said you liked with that woofer. It will be like comparing apples to oranges in the sound and small changes in freq response and power response can radically change preception. You can get reference quality sound out of that 3 way you have their BUt it will be at the expense of having a low peak volume and perception of dynamics may not be their

I would have started with a larger and higher sensativity woofer for a 3 way like that. Maybe even take the Mid down to 350hz

Exactly. That is well put.

What are the chances too that your 2-way is sitting in a bookshelf or up against a wall or on a desk or some such so that the 6dB of baffle step loss is avoided?

Man I wish these things were stickied somewhere.....
