After wanting to build these for a couple of years, everything came together for me to build them.
This is all subjective. There was no rigor in 'testing' them. No A/B with all the same settings for volume/EQ. I didn't listen to them without the sub, I've never measured the response of the room. Just what I found in trying them with my go-to music for critical listening. This is in no way a criticim of the uFonken, a great little speaker that I have enjoyed immensely.
Right away I noticed, more air around them, the sound stage is more 3D, but a weakening of the center image. The effect is a little unsettling at times. Maybe I'm just not used to it yet. I'm guessing this is the rear ports at work.
To my ear they integrate better with the Voxel sub, my main goal in trying them. I did not tweak the crossover yet, it is still set the same as with the uFonken. I did knock back the volume on the sub, and didn't roll off the sub as much. While far from stellar, I found the bass to be tighter, a little less muddy, a definite win for what I like to hear in music.
They are a tad more forward than the uFonken, but i like it. It brings male voices out of the mix a little better, and female voices smooth out a bit.
The sibilance is tamed a bit. Tame is probably too strong a word, but I removed my roll-off above 7k. In general, I used less EQ. (I EQ to taste not in search of flat room response. Call it 18 band tone controls)
In the end, the Lance speakers are everything I hoped they would be. I'm really pleased with them and will probably do another design from the baby series, something for a 4" maybe the Skyflash.

How do you like the Voxel sub? I have the Lance with FF105wk and have been thinking about adding a small sub.

I really like it. It's no miracle at its size, there is a trade-off between volume and how low it can go. I use EQ to roll off the lower frequencies depending on the music I'm listening to at what volume to keep it from breaking up.
I like that it's small. I call it a desktop sub because I keep it between the speakers preserving the phase relationship with them.
It can be very inexpensive. The design called for the ferrite magnet version of the driver which costs $37. I used MDF and the sheet I used cost $13.
I also tried the NRNP sub if you are interested in something really small though I recommend the Voxel over that.

Great thanks. I'm going to give it a try.
Pics please 🙂
Prolly not going to happen They hold up a board holding up my TV so they don't get much light on them and they are behind a bar on the footboard of my bed.
If I swing them around to take pictures, for some reason, I'll post them.
I'm a big fan of the Lance, having made 3 pairs already. They are easy to build because all of the panels are 4" wide in various lengths, except the 8" side panels, and all right angles.
Since I've made mine for smaller environments, like on my desk in my office, and dorm rooms, I've never tried them with a sub. I'll bet they sound really good that way. Next time I have a pair in my house I'll give it a try with my SVS 20-39 sub. I haven't turned that sub on in years.

Zac - if there's an easy way to include some HP filtering on the Lances when running with sub, try between 80 -100Hz.
Yup, the entire line of Scott's baby-labs are pretty straightforward builds - certainly more so than a trapezoid milli /microFonken.
If they seem to have more deeply extended and impactive bass than other enclosures for a given driver model it's probably because they were designed with different targeted reponse by someone who has a pretty good handle on how to "get there".

Hi ezas,
Thanks for sharing your listening impressions of the Lances. They are great sounding speakers in small packaging. Happy listening! 🙂

+1
I just finished a pair with the Aura NS-3's. Very impressive. The drivers were new, so it took a fews minutes for them to sound good. Now they actually sound great. I'm running them off one of these:
TPA3116D Class D Amplifier Board with Anti-Pop 2 x 50W
These were a very simple build and didn't take long. A definite keeper. The cabinets aren't finished yet. I like to see if I like the speakers before I veneer. I will be veneering these!

Nice work and good to know these deliver - another "superior" PC speaker/nearfield speaker to the list? 🙂
So glad that you decided on the Babylabs series. They perform very well. You’ve built the Redeyes haven’t you?
What dampening material did you line the boxes with?
Give the drivers some time to break-in. They’ll sound even better once they’ve opened up fully.
Will be interested in your listening impressions once you've got your speakers set up. 🙂

I did build the Red Eyes. They are definitely continuing to sound be as they play more. I'm giving serious consideration to ordering a pair of Mark Audio A5.2'a and A6's. These little Woden Babylab designs are quite nice and really seem to bring out the best in speakers.

Mike - what power supply are you using with that little amp?
Hi Chris,
I'm using this power supply: https://www.parts-express.com/24-vd...ith-25-x-55mm-plug-and-led-indicator--129-160
It's on sale now so I might grab another if I can put together enough stuff to get free shipping.

That would be a wise investment. Do take some time off to read this thread if you haven't already done so.

Mike - at those prices this is another example of "a nice enclosure can cost more than the working parts" 😀
As for choice of drivers - when in doubt, try them all, and sell / gift to family the ones you like least - just be careful how you parse the ad or gift card😉

I agree Chris. And those darn Mark Audio drivers... they just sound great to me. They tickle the section of my ears that respond well to what I consider "good sounding music." I think I have a closet dream of trying one of each of the MA drivers. I really want to try the A12P and A7P FAST combination. I need to put that in my speaker budget and get it done. However, I also want to try the A5.2, A6, A7P, etc..........
