relay volume control

Hello everybody .
can you tell me where to find information on the volume control configuration made in relay similar to R2R configuration?
I also need a schematic to understand how it works.

The project is basically A BPPBP (preamp by Bruno Putzeys) with relay volume control (0 to -63dB).

why are there different versions?
this for example:

What is different? I put two of your "different" examples in one image and they seem identical to me. Can you mark-up where you see differences?

I'm sure there ARE different ways to do it, but true creativity in audio is rare.

in the diagram above there is a fixed resistor at the input
in the one below, however, no.
