Hi all,
Here is an attractive new design by Visaton, a FAST crossing at 270hz towards their B80 full range speaker.
Cleverly, the BR opening is between the FR and bass cabinets. It does look nice, for sure:
Details (in German) including plan are here:
ZYKLOP
Zyklop
Listening test in magazine Hobby Hifi can be found here:
Strassacker: Lautsprecherbausätze (Lautsprecherboxen-Bausätze) und Lautsprecherlösungen
I don't have the magazine to see the measurement under 30 degrees but they say that it is best to orient the speaker towards the listening position, the B80 beams from 5000 hz upwards.
Comments?

An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

Very nice. Since my woodworking skills are limited I always try to simplify more elaborate designs. This one can be two boxes without the angles.
The specs on the B80 are very close to a TC9FD. The box looks kind of cool in a boxy way but I would probably make a bi amp active version with PLLXO with a Peerless 8in woofer.
When they start looking at relatively high order speaker level passive filters at those kind of frequencies, I start to find I have better things to be doing. Component values are in relative terms very high; price goes up significantly, especially if you want to avoid excessive insertion losses. You could probably get away with electrolytic caps to get things down a bit. No doubt it works well enough for what it is, but not to my taste. YMMV as ever.
For the cost of the crossover alone you could buy a decent wide band full range driver!

Well in the link Visaton Zyklop the full kit price is 299 euro, or with better filter components 338 euro, this is per speaker.
I can find at www.oaudio.de that the price of the Tangband W8-1808 is 297 euro in Germany, roughly the same for a puristic approach with a good FR driver.
The interesting thing about the Zyklop is a decent, full bass in a reasonably compact enclosure with a design that could be called spouse-friendly.
The listening comments from Hobby Hifi are confidence boosting (to be frank, they never give a bad review, but you can interprete the weaker points for yourself).
It is a speaker I would be curious to hear.

I agree, now when I still lived in Belgium I had access to a wood shop that could cut the angled sides of the panels. Then this kind of sexy design suddenly becomes doable.

That's sexy.😕

This should be very nice. I got feeling from past experience working with TIW series from Visaton that this are one of the best woofers for money and they arent cheap. Would say they are extremly fast.
I love the look in the first photo, but when I realised it is a standmounter in the second photo I am not so sure anymore.
In the process to make them hope I like the SoundI love the look in the first photo, but when I realised it is a standmounter in the second photo I am not so sure anymore.
