There's no competition, IMHO.
When you hear a preamp without conventional volume control you become aware of all the subtle maskings that occure during reproduction.
Think about window glass that is perfectly clean and flat. You'll be tempted to say you can see perfectly trough.
Now open the window and stick your head out. That's ZM's attenuator and that would be my description of difference.
Most neutral you can get for anny money. If you crave for some taste or sugar, you'll be pushed to find it in source equipment or in output amps.
Given that this is used as an attenuation device, then another form of it could be used a sort of amplification device as well? That has been on my mind for some time now.
