yea, they look pretty average on the outside, but they have this big **** magnet on the back, bout the same size as the cones, so I thought they might be pretty good in a larger enclosure of some sorts, as they do pump out quite amazing sound for the volume...
I also have a pair of drivers from a 70's turntable/radio unit that where in huge chipboard speaker box's (rotted), magnavox...
200mm main driver, but pissy lil magnet on it, but one of the frugal's designed for a 200mm driver would look too large in the 'wifes lounge'.
I want minimal impact (visually & wallet ) with maximum impact (sonically) 🙂

pine/mdf/hdf is not the problem, as it will cost 1/2 the price of a single fe126.
but all else fails, I will buy some drivers, IF I do it will probably be some fe126e's for upstairs in a zigmahornet and some FE208EZ in a frugal spawn for downstairs, but atm I have a few sheets of 16mm mdf floating round (left overs from building my bass traps & 3 meter curved projection screen frame), so trying to get some ideas, as I really know naff all about speakers specifics, but always willing to learn.

Potential Quick'n'Dirty Zig clone?
I've been thinking about a way to build something that approaches a Zigmahornet very quickly, and with a minimum of carpentry.
In my local hardware store I came across 1800mm lengths of 100mm x 80mm rectangular section galvanised steel downpipe. Looking at the plans on the Planet10 site, this is pretty close to the internal cross-section of the Zig.
Cut the pipe to the appropriate length, bevel & seal at the upper end.
It shouldn't be difficult to cut a felt strip to glue to the insides of the downpipe.
I'm thinking a wooden disc supra-baffle to mate the driver to the wider face of the downpipe.
Then all you need to do is set about damping any vibration. As I first thought, what I'd do is glue two full-length strips of L-shaped timber moulding down the rear edges. Perhaps down the front as well (except where the supra-baffle attaches.)? You could use exterior gap-sealer?
Mount to a base, wire up.
Voila!
Is the above likely to succeed? Opinion?

You buy them directly from Dave Merrill (d'Charles Audio).
He imports them 50-100 at a time from a Chinese manufacturer -- he is a one man operation and i don't think anyone has actually done an enclosure optimized for these yet. Looks like a decent alternative if you can't afford CSS FR125SR or modded Fostex FE127e. (i've not yet talked Dave out of a set)

One should note that none of the boxes Dave is recommending for these drivers is optimum. I did the math for a miniOnken derivative for the DCA5.5 and it needs 20 litres (vrs the 13 in a miniOnken)

I noted as I was sanding the cabinet, significant cabinet resonance. Dave's cabinet calls for 1/2" of Baltic Birch plywood which I am using and I am under impression resonance may color the sound.
Anyone know if this is expected or perhaps built in the design. (plan to send an email to D. Merrill).
