It depends on the circuit (impedance, frequency, etc.). I've run great drooping loops as long as three or four feet that worked just fine, and run into trouble with little dinky things an inch or two long.
When all's said and done, try it and see if it works, but as a general rule, yes, I agree, shorter increases your chances of getting away with it.
