yet another lilliput 7" projector in the work

hello there. . ive been browsing these forums for about a week now with the intention of building an ohp LCD but i couldnt alllow myself to make something so simple... 🙁 dont know why. anyhow im planning a 7" projector and i made some very very sketchy designs (please note i am a newb and lack all information regarding projector building)

ive been browsing ebay and i get can get a 400w growing bulb with a ballast for a reasonable price

ill also be gettting the lilliput 7" TFT from ebay (ive read there 1024x768 resolution... is this correct? any more info on the screen would be of great help)

i will be getting the optics set from

ill be making the housing out of MDF and something not as.. woody around the lamp

as i say im a total newb so this should be a good learning experience 😀

Hi Calavera, welcome 🙂

Nice first plan, very neat!

Be careful with the bulb spec's, I believe the growing bulbs tend to have wrong colour temperatures. You want to aim for 4000-5000K. Size of the bulbs outer envelope is important too, try and aim for a slim lamp (FC2 holders) - Not the end of the world if you get a larger base, it will just narrow your options on reflectors.

The liliputs aren't XGA, the good ones are stated as 2400X480, which in reality is 800X480 (tut tut manufacturers trying to make it sound better than it is!). Fine for TV/DVD, if you want XGA for PC/HiDef you might want to look elsewhere.

Good luck 🙂

thanks Quin. ive been trying to look for an alternative screen (the 13" TFT phillip1010 used looks great" but im not getting good results.. i actually won a 15" tft for £65 of ebay but its been 4 days and he hasnt accepted the paypal payment so i canceled it 😀

while im here i have a friend who insists using LED's he seems to think it can be done with 20 or so.. so can someone please tell me how many lumens a 250w bulb produces 😀

we've also come up with an idea for a possible cooling

(this is a pic of 2 designs)

working like a air hockey table.. a tube full of holes connected to a fan blowing air all over the screen

(seems the air system wont work as theres no pressure)

additional : Quin, when you say "aim for 4000-5000K" what is that in? lumens? (im so newbish)

I have build a 7" lilliput project using a 400w hqi bulb and it gets hot, very hot, i would consider a 250w

Also i would consider putting a mirror into your design

The lilliput picture is nice, very nice high quality but if you want to play games then i would recomend a 15" tft like a benq or something,

400w + lilliput 7"= lots and lots of work and braint power 🙁

Hi,

Have a search of the forums regarding LEDs, there's been lots of discussions. Very general summation is: not worth it 😀 Incredible headaches involved getting an array of them working, and they're not as efficient as people think.

Your cooling systems seems original, however I think its probably best sticking to a simple pc fan blowing over the surface. Hey if it ain't broke... 😉

With 4000K-5000K I was refering the colour temperature:

I seem to recall grow lamps using very high colour temperature lamps, unsuitable for projection.

As for the TFT, what sort of 'darkness'? Patches and spots could suggest overheating/nackered pixels, entire sections could be backlight faults (perfect cheap screen for us 🙂)

got outbidded for that monitor.. anyhow i think i may go for a 15" TFT oppose the the lilliput and build a simple desing (like philip101's) and i have some small questions..

its the lightbox really nessecery? can you just put the builb infont of a spherical reflector and a condensor in front?

can i use this floodlight?
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=46571&item=3879138502&rd=1

ive seen this over at lumenlab and from what i can see it doesnt have a condensor

just quicky made this design

how does it look

as for cooling i could use a fan and an exhaust fan and connect them to something like this

it would give me speed control over the fans + a temperature sensor
and indicator

Hi mate,

Condensor lens isn't essential, it will work without.

That auction looks promising, I take it there's a ballast built in? Hard to tell from the auction description. Without knowing the lamp specs you might end up getting sometihng unsuitable, but they're not hugely expensive to change. I went through 3x lamps before I was satisfied regarding UV control!

Basic design is a very common one, shouldn't present any problems.

The fancontroller is a good idea, I use something similiar in my setup (a cheap Super Flower Fan contoller with 4x temp probes, LCD & temperature alarms - Good for £17!). Bear in mind you may need a 5v supply for it's LCD pannel....

ive been looking a power suppy and then it him me.. i was staring at a possible power supply

yes.. its an xbox power supply, true it has a atx power supply but it also has a 5v molex.. and i can slap a molex splitter on that yes?

(maybe i wont need to, my pc case now is a thermaltake and has 7 fans :/ and the fan controller needs two 5v molex connectors to work but maybe a small fan controlller doesnt need one 😀

anyhow.. will a TFT with a cracked screen work?
