Yamaha RX-730 power issues

Just got the Yamaha RX-730 in the mail today. It has issues, which I knew
before I got it.Just ordered the service manual. Here are the symptons.
You push power switch...hear the relay click. The only thing that lights up
is the red LED on the volume knob.No display lights at all.Any tips on where
I should start my troubleshooting once the service manual arrives?

Forgive me if this is a stupid suggestion. I bought a second hand RX-530 with the same issues, however it has no LED so I thought it was dead. A week later I decided to try hooking up speakers and after cycling though the inputs it played! There's a single bulb for the display which burned out. The relay is just the turn on delay.

Again, sounds stupid, but the same situation had me studying the amp and schematic for a week.

AtticusJ is absolutely correct. I have an RX-730 that I rescued from a dumpster and it works fantastically with a new display lamp. Unfortunately the lamp i used was a cheapo radioshack lamp that burnt out a couple months later. Currently trying to find a higher quality lamp. Hope you figured it out already!

The bulb issue is the voltage rating. 6, 9 or 12v globes in a 14v application (typical rating in earlier Japanese gear) just won't last. If you can't source correct parts, fit a series resistor of suitable value and power rating, based on dimming the globe to half brightness, for example.
