Frist off id like to say that i know absoultly nothing about vinyl so i have a question about mine.

My uncle gave me his Yamaha P30 player a while back and all of his LPs and i wanted to hook it up today and its not putting out any music. it looks as though there is no needle touching the vinyl so this would most likly be my main problem.

As i said it is a Yamaha P30 player, i dont know if i need a new stylus or a cartridge, since i dont know the difference between the two. (im assuming the stylus is the arm assembly and the cartridge is the end piece) any help would greatly be appreciated!!

The stylus is just the needle assembly. The jobbie that it slides into, with the four pins and the tiny electrical connections is the cartridge. If you can just get a replacement stylus, that should get you back in business. If not, a whole new cartridge is not a big deal, more-or-less a $50 item.

The closeup confirms- your stylus assembly is missing. Depending on the age of the unit, a new stylus may or may not be findable (my favorite cartridge ever is sitting in a box since the styli are no longer available).

Run a Google on the model number and see what comes up.

You can get a repacement needle(stylus) from Radio Shack. Pull the plastic stylus holder straight off the front of te cartridge. You will see a number. My Yamaha P-30 says "CG 8300" Take this # to your local Radio Shack. They will look it up and take your money ($10.00 last time I got one) and your address and your new needle will arrive within about ten days.
These needles are quite fragile and prone to breaking off easily.

Best of luck, John

so i finally got my part in the mail today and got it hooked up tonight. at least it fits.......

next problem..

the "platter", i believe thats what it is called, does not spin flat. the only way i can explain it would be that it occiliates up and down causing the needle to go crazy up and down the record..

is there anything i can do to fix this??
