Yamaha P1600?

I'm thinking about buying a used P1600 amp for home use (sub amp or possibly more) since I hope it can handle complicated loads well. Just out of curiosity I downloaded the schematic, but I'm a bit confused.. Seems like a pretty complicated design? Some kind of double/variable 'rail voltage' to the output transistors, or why are they arranged in series?

Any other thoughts on these? Worth buying for 'hifi' use?
Some people seem to think they sound good.

Hey,

i brought a P1600 in Januar for 5€, so cheap that i could not resist. I will use it for driving 2 12" Woofers in my home cinema. The amp is well built but my one has a serious transformer humming noise. I tried to remove it mechanically by adding damping sheets, decoupling the screw and other things to avoid that the transformer causes the case to vibrate but it didnt help.

People start saying they sond good to every Yamaha Power Amp.. i think it all started with the P2200 which is nearly similar to the M-2 Home Hifi Amp.

The P1600 is a basic PA-Power Amp and should not be compared with the earlier Yamha PA Amps which are based upon their hifi amps. But as far as i`ve tested the amp it will do a decent job in driving subwoofers.

This won`t answer all your questions but maybe it helps you to decide if you want to buy it.

By the way - any tips to remove the transformer hum?

Ok, this one is ~160Eur, so not really such a bargain.. maybe I would be better off buying something else.. I bought a behringer NU1000 ('Inuke' class D), but I'm not so happy with the sound, sounds ok up to abt 80Hz(subs), but I would like to use it for bass in an active speaker setup, and higher bass sound kind of 'boomy' with that amp for some reason.. Seems worse on low impedance speakers, fairly ok on 8ohm.

Humming: probably something vibrating creating the noise, if it is a toroid transformer I would think it's probably the windings vibrating. Baking the windings completely with epoxy should make it quiet, but it's not easy to get the epoxy in there.. would require vacuum etc..

I would expect the Yamaha to sound worlds better than an iNuke. I have a P3500 and have no complaints with it. The iNukes are built really really reallly cheaply, and no sophistication to the design whatsoever. Just a very basic class D with no thermal design margin at all and the dead time control maxed on the chip set.

To quiet a buzzing transformer takes multiple dips (and drying cycles) in electrical varnish. One of the members here did it with the 2.5kVa toroid in a CA18. Took him at least a month. He had more patience than I do.

I bought the amp yesterday after I did a functional test with a small speaker and my phone as source at the seller.
No hum, buzzing etc, and sound was clean. However fan noise was a bit disturbing.
When I came home I tested it with bass (up to abt 400Hz) on an active setup, and was not too happy. It sounded 'warm' in the low bass and boomy in the higher bass, the bass is not tight and accurate as I hoped. The Behringer actually sounds better.. Power is there to move the cones, but it does not sound right.
I suspect I need to recap, I had the same problem on a Thule amp, and it was absolutely transformed after I put in some new caps. A quiet fan will be needed too.

Maybe a vacuum chamber is not the only way, but if you have it, use it! I think it will do good for the transformer hum.

Hi,

i`m wondering about your fan noise. I was finally able to test the P1600 with 2 12" Cinema Subs and even on extreme Level (-7dB) the amp didn`t warm up very much and also the fan was not running after half an hour of explosion scenes... Maybe my fan is broken or your amp has a serious heating problem?

Regarding the sound: I cannot judge the amp because this was the first time i heared the 12" subs. I can make a comparison between the P1600 and a Yamaha M45 in the future but i think there wont be a huge difference. The first scene of Master and Commander was awesome but i don´t have any comparison with other amps on this subwoofer yet.

I will the let the buzzing transformer as it is. In cinema use its completly unimportant.

The fan should be running all the time (at least it does on my amp), so it's a good idea to check it.
I went ahead and replaced all electrolytics on my amp, but did not notice any major difference. Left in the old caps in the PS and added new ones too since there was room for more on the board.
However, after replacing the fan with a quiet one, I can hear some transformer buzzing too..
BTW the amp sounds good full range too!
