Do I need a pre amp to test the yamaha mx1000?
I tried sending dvd audio directly into the unit and had no sound.

I usually use my computers soundcard output as my test pre-amp and Yes I think you do need one Better brains than mine will give you a definitive answer soon

No you don't need a preamp to test the MX-1000. I have the variable output from my CD player directly connected to my B-1 inputs and it works just fine and sounds superb. I've done the same with my MP3 player headphone out and I've connect other power amps the same way and they've all worked fine that way too so I'm thinking there's likely something wrong with your MX-1000 ...
