I'm working on a mono WAW system with a Scanspeak 10F8418G10 in a 1.2L sealed enclosure covering about 150Hz and up and a TB W6-223S run by a plate amp doing bass duty. While I'm generally pleased with the sound at the normal 80-85dB listening level, I'm wondering if a 200uf cap would let the 10F perform even better.
The problem is space - finding room for such a film cap may not be possible. Does anybody have a recommendation of an electrolytic that wouldn't be an insult to this special little driver?
TIA, Karl

I don't think that will be the case, certainly not with an electrolyte with a high ESR which will attenuate the 10F slightly. Pure on sound (disregarding the ESR) it won't make a difference at first, but elco's are unstable and change specs with aging...
And when simming that 10F in the box you mention, i don't think that extra filter is needed. That box and driver create a +/- 12dB (2nd order) slope down from an F3 of 144Hz, making it steeper won't make it sound better.
But if you insist, any bipolar elco cap from a good manufacturer will do, Nichicon, Panasonic, Elna, Kemet, ... are good ones.

Thanks for your input and running the simulation Waxx, I didn't consider how steep the mechanical slope would be.

XRK, I've never tried bypassing caps but have read about it adding a little of the film magic. Kind of like a tube pre in front of a SS amp?

Well not the same analogy. With a tube preamp driving a SS amp it’s more like the analogy of human wearing a powered exoskeleton suit like in the movie Aliens.
A bypass film cap should have better high frequency response (lower ESR) than the electrolytic cap at high frequencies. This gives more detail and texture. It’s like changing the resolution of your playback from 720p to UHD. (I’m exaggerating).

Is ~$56 for a solen 200uF film cap within reason? Size is probably as mentioned the biggest concern. 62mm Dia 110mm long. Solen Capacitor 200uF 400Vdc PB Series

The Audyn Q4 caps are cheaper., the Erse PulseX are as well; in the 100uF flavor.
A split of the difference, 100uF poly and a pair of 200uF 63VDC polarized caps in series back to back might be the most cost effective.
You might be able to get a good deal off Ebay for some Unlytics.

Just as a minor note: depending on implementation, a simple series cap may not quite do what you're looking for. You'll get the target initial rolloff you desire, assuming you've specified the value correctly for your goals, but unless you've mechanically flattened the impedance peak at tuning you will probably have a significant peak in its output at that frequency. That may or may not disrupt the overall system response (the balance of probability being that it will, to some extent) but you may find power-handling / dynamic range suffers. So it's possible you may need to consider an Fb impedance-flattening LCR Zobel to prevent that. YMMV as always; better to note these things in advance so if you do run into any issue you've got a head-start on addressing it.
Thanks for all the input, and education. (I Use those Solen 200uf caps in my large OB speakers, they are the size of a small energy drink can)
Once I do some clean-up of the wiring I will post a few pictures of the system and they will show just how little room there is.
The sound continues to improve as the drivers loosen up, for a fun little project I'm quite happy.

Using the info provided above I'm letting the box control the XO for the Scanspeak 10F.
Built into an Admiral tabletop record player cabinet bought on the Bay, the 10F is fed by a Bottlehead S.E.X. amp (2W/ch) and the TangBand flat 6.5 inch sub runs off of a 25w plate amp from PE. The ported sub box is lined with half-inch F13 wool felt and the sealed full-ranger is lightly stuffed with poly and lined with 1/4 inch F13 behind the driver.
My moderate CD collection and numerous digitized LPs are on the tiny FiiO M6. Karl

I have had good results using nichicon muse BP bipolar capacitors for the outputs of a colorfly c3 to headphones in a 'Black Gate super e' configuration. I bypassed them with a film cap because of an edgy sound in the base of my skull, that fixed it. The bypass film was just some I had, but the first time I found that the film bypass was too large in value leading to a mismatch in the way the bass and treble sounded. It's necessary to have the bypass, imo, but I found a value that had a high pass cutoff of 30khz with the nominal driver impedance using this calculator solved that problem. Other values might work..
RC High-pass Filter Design Tool
You can google black gate super e, but it's two caps in parallel, two bipolar electrolytics with their 'polarity' connected opposite each other.
