Xenon Vs Metal Halide Input needed
Does anyone know of the pro's and con's of each light source, as its pretty plain better light source = better picture. I think it would be a benefit to all of us if we knew what other peoples trial and error have shown. In fact post your views on any light source that you already know is pretty dam good for projection projects.
It will be interesting to see where you sourced your parts from and what main problems you faced, heat, electrical etc. Also if you did any mod work on your OHP / Home projector these would be appreciated too.
It’s a shame no one has made a FAQ about this very important fact when building a projection system.
Cheers
Andy

Xenon if you are talking the real Xenon stuff not those stupid halogen lights for cars, is much much better. Commercial projectors use it. But for home use its not a good idea....it requires a huge powersupply, generates decent heat, high voltages, and i cant believe i'm about to say this....most likely too much light. MH is the best we have right now, Xenon is overkill.
xenon expensive
exept if you live in CN.
then xenon costs about $60 and you will buy it on the streets in markets like our good friend YWH.

Yes, but still, i think there a lot of things getting in the way....mainly an expensive power supply and lots of voltage and heat requirmements that you dont see with MH...I wish you good luck, but there's a reason the sized projectors we see use MH, UHP, etc....i'm not aware of any using Xenon....only the pro's use it(real theatrers)
Ouch, True I was looking at Xenon unit, true their dam expensive. Metal halides commonly used in our type of projects are huge! This really does add to the size of the project, however if you used a Xenon, you could get an ohp and fit it straight in like YWH, no need to mess about with whopper sized reflectors. (Off topic)Call me silly but wouldn’t you need a condenser the size of reflector which is common on most ohp's, completely lacking in home DIY projectors. It looks like YWH got a Motorbike Xenon power supply + Xenon, adapted that and fitted it into his OHP. Worked fine for him.
Either, which ever is in reach of the home brew builder, it was an example of someone success *YWH* with Xenon 🙂.

Here is someone success with MH 🙂. 400W and 1000W !!!! http://www.hommie.net
I mean wo, 300 watts Xenon (5500k), vs 1000W (4000K) MH you decide…
