I have a ack! dAck! unit on the way - and wanted to try the NEC combo w/it - I hear they work well together. I live in Alabama. Can pay with postal M/O + shipping.

Do you have any used computer stores near you? That's a good place to get them cheap and easy. There's one here in Seattle with at least 10 of 'em laying around (4x and 6x external NEC's)
you can get them on ebay
i have two working with external dac's
they are ok but they dont read everything though
never read rewritables and not even some coloured cd's

Any suggestions on what to use as a transport for the dAck!
I have a list of Pioneer units that are suggested as good transports - but none appear on Ebay or Audiogon.
Will keep up the search. I really dont want to spend a ton on a transport - I am open to suggestions.

I bought a couple NEC 6X drives off ebay for peanuts. They do sound excellent when paired up with a good DAC. Highly recommended.

I'm of the opinion that a decent DVD player will do the job. Look around for some of the Toshiba SD-3950/60/80's or one of the other decent DVD players. Almost all of them will read just about any type of CD with no problem, regardless of minor surface damage.
I also hear that most DVD players do a better job on the digital output side too than standard CD transports. Hell, you might have a DVD player laying around that you can use 🙂
