Hi WaltubeHi
I have done some LCR phono.
https://www.diyaudio.com/community/threads/the-lcr-phono-stage.381065/
using Sowter 1280 inductors.
The I switch to a custom stuff done by a little company in Italy.
The technical comparision are very fine and no differences are seen
By custom stuff you mean finemet chokes? or ?
Thanks!
Regards
Interesting! Why do you not like finemet interstage sound? Too detailed?
Thanks!
Love detailed. That was not it. In the particular amp i intended to use the interstages, there were already finemet outputs, which until that time i really loved. The addition of the interstages made the amp unlistenable. Wrong timbre, frozen, bright white, annoying sound. Took me a lot longer to realise the outputs were also not for me, although their stunning bass, speed and detail were quite distracting from what i later perceived as a lack of musicality.
At the time, my comparison references for interstages were steel and permalloy Tangos and a custom ordered amorhous, wound on a much larger core than either the Tangos or the Noguchis. Could have lived with any of those but not with the Noguchi.
Worth noticing there are very different accounts on the finemet sound in general. It could be the particular cores Noguchi were using, or the combination of cores + winding layout, it could easily be my system or ears.
Oh I see! Thanks so much! like kind of robbed it of its colour/musicality? like too much silver in a system?Love detailed. That was not it. Did you try finemet chokes as well?
Thanks!
The interstages were particularly bad. Tried them in a solid state system and they were similarly unpleasant there. The analogy with silver is not apt as unlike silver they also gave the impression of distortion in the upper midrange which caused all music to sound strained. And unlike silver, there was no shortage of power in the bass.
It is wrong to draw any general conclusions about a core material based on a single experience. More data sources are needed.
No experience with finemet chokes at all.

Oic thanks so much for sharing your experiences! Will bear that in mind! The interstages were particularly bad. Tried them in a solid state system and they were similarly unpleasant there.
