Worn Tube Rectifier

Are there any audible symptoms when a tube rectifier is close to worn out? According to guitar techs, a tube rec either works or it doesn't and also does not contribute to the overall sound unless you change the rectifier type. Can anyone shed some light on this statement? Thanks.

With wearout internal resistance increases, causing DC voltage to drop under load. This may cause distortion depending on low voltage tolerance of the particular amplifier. Or dropout if excessively low. Also hum may increase.
