An array has its own set of compromises. Besides cost, it has a nominal 3 dB/octave decrease in FR due to the combing. The FR can be EQed but the combing cannot.

In years of playing at that I would say 1k is low enough for an 8 inch woofer. Meaning easy for me to get good results at that cross point. Above about 1.5 K I have a much harder time getting things to sound convincing.
