Interesting about the 140-15D, in all my conversations with Aleksandar(the designer/owner of Raal) he never once mentioned adding a horn or waveguide to make it work correctly at 2k. Maybe he's still watching this thread and could comment on this.
We can narrow down 'best tweeters for the job' to a handful of amt/ribbons and hard dome tweets imo.it is fun to compare notes but ultimately it does not help a whole lot since there is no such thing as "the best tweeter", only the best tweeter for the job (given the rest of the speaker). I find that even matching amplifier with speaker has impact on the top freq reproduction.
the waveguides are mostly to change the dispersion characteristics of the driver, but the added efficiency low down is always welcome.
here is some old smoothed measurements of the raal with and without the waveguide. (blue is stock)

So where do you get a waveguide to fit the 140-15D and how much are they. Interesting the response curve(blue line) you show, it hardly resembles what Raal shows for their measured curves. So are yours correct or theirs, why the huge differences? What size was the baffle plate you used ( the tweeter mounted on)?

this is the dipole version, and it was mounted on a baffle the size of the driver.
(note that the above measurements both have the same 2khz LR24 crossover.
the waveguide is from horns.pl

Do you have a model number for one that works with the 140-15d. I've never worked with waveguides thus the questions.
the cheaper viawave comes with a fairly deep waveguide - the more expensive 'sealed ribbon' viawave has shallow waveguides supplied by the US distributor. Take a look on PETT forum
this is the waveguide i have:
SEOS-RAAL - Horns by Auto-Tech
i bought it used so not sure about the price.

RAAL's natural frequency response may not be as flat as a high-end dome such Tlab, Seas or Scan but once you EQ it, they're just unbeatable.
Please. Please. If you ever find one that is truly better... LET ME KNOW. 🙂
Well, if you are still interested, I've tested the T29D001 and I feel it's substantially better than the RAAL 70-20. It's just as fast and articulate, but has much better upper mid dynamics.

I'm adding some clarification here, for the reason that I didn't know what a "T29D001" was, when I first saw the number......
Seas Excel T29D001, had anyone heard it?
Some people claim it is close to raal, but I don't see how as it has a lot more moving mass.
Here's one I just stumbled on. It looks very interesting. Myself, I use the Stage Accompany sa-8535. It's been singing beautiful music to me for 18 years.
Many of my friends ask me what I could recommend. Might be (?) this one, but it would cost them PLENTY, to find out !!
Mundorf AMT164UM2.3-R Air Motion Tweeter (AMT)
I tried the Beumyma TPL-150 which must be similar in sound to both the mundorf and accompany and I think it is cleaner than many dome tweeters, but not clean from that plastic artifificial sound.
Here's some Raal 15D-140 Measurements if someone hasn't seen: www.audioexcite.com Blog Archive RAAL 140-15D Ribbon Tweeter Measurements!
Distortion plot is H3 dominant, which is quite odd (no pun intended 😉). Step-down transformer? Usually ribbons have vanishingly low higher order harmonics above ~5khz, even the little ones.

I'm late to this party. The low odd order harmonics is a positive attribute of ribbons and why some folks like them crossed above mid-horns which also share that attribute. YMMV

I have two custom models from Ascend, one with the RAAL 70-20 and the other with the T29D001. Both at 1.8KHz crossover points.
The 70-20 is a tad brighter but the performance in the midrange and upper mids is no contest, the vocals on the T29D001 are much better than the 70-20 and the percussion instruments are more dynamic. The soundstage is also much better on the T29D001, mainly because of the lack of vertical axis dispersion of the 70-20. The 70-20 has a bit more air. In a 2-way setup the T29D001 is much better, the tweeter plays almost flat down to 600Hz so it's much easier to integrate with a woofer in a 2-way, but it's possible the that the 70-20 might work better in a 3-way.
