Haven't read the whole thread. Maybe repeating something here. I cheat a little. Statistically the word salet is the best starter. It's not in my vocab originally so that's a bit of a cheat, perhaps. I find that if I start with this, and discipline myself to reuse established (green) letters and not reuse dead (yellow) letters I can average about 3.5 over time. I generally try to reason which, if there is more than a single possibility, is the more commonly used word. I can't be sure but it seems to be part of the algorithm to favor those.
The most frustrating stumblers are the oddballs like abyss. And worse, the occasions when you end up with something like _aste or _atch and just have to blow through the half dozen possibilities while trying to stay in the game. That can kill your average so quickly it just seems unfair.
