Hello
I'm completely new to the hole world of diy speakers so any advice would be appreciated.
I've bought a complete set of ENDORPHINE P17 Open baffle speakers. The plans/specs for these can be found here: Endorphine from Kingston Kitchen
However the guy who built them used these for the bass drivers:Dayton Audio DC380-8 15" Classic Woofer
Looking at the recommendations from the original design these might not be the best match. I'm looking for some advice on a driver that might be a better match, that won't break the bank and won't be impossible to find. Alot to ask I know.
So far I have found this:Dayton Audio PA380-8 15" Pro Woofer Is there any reason I shouldn't use this driver?
I have seen people use Eminience Alpha 15's with good results, this would be the safest bet would like some other options.

If it is a passive crossover, the first Dayton is definitely not suitable because it is less efficient than the mid driver. The second Dayton is kind of okay: high efficiency + low fs but the Qts is too low and the xmax is also on the low side.
You may think of moving towards lampizator's p24: add an efficient 15" on the flat baffle (get rid of the U baffle) and also add a single (mono) ripole subwoofer active by a DSP plate amp. You may try to use the Daytons you already have on the ripole subwoofer, but then again they may come short on efficiency and xmax department.

Hi,
The PA380's Qts is too low, the Alpha's Qts too high.
Look at the Eminence Beta 15 IMO.
rgds, sreten.

PA 380
You can use the Dayton PA 380, if you place a back cover on the "box".
Oh, and fill it with fiberglass and figure out a vent size, which you can also place on the back to keep the look the same. The PA 380 actually works pretty good in a relatively small box for a 15.

Thanks for all the advice. As for moving towards the P24 project I'm not looking to do to much fabrication with this so I think I'm going to stick with just swapping out drivers.
Looking more at the Eminence line I found this: Eminence Kappa Pro-15LF-2 15" Cast Frame Driver The only spec that doesn't match the ones set out in the original design is the Qts (0.3 rather then minimum of 0.35 specified) will this 0.05 difference make a huge difference? Its kinda confusing because when i look up the specs of the Driver specified in the original design (Altec 416 http://www.greatplainsaudio.com/vintage_altec/416-8B_LF_Speaker.pdf) it shows it having a Qts of 0.23, which is why I thought the Dayton in my original post might work.
Is there a reason he would give a spec of minimum Qts=0.35 then reference a driver that doesn't match that?
Thanks

the new production GPA 416-8Bs have higher qts.
there is no rule that says low qts drivers cannot be used for OB.
it is just that the dipole roll-off would be much steeper.
on the other hand woofers with low qts and low xmax would have so low output down low that they should probably be ruled out for OB use.
in the endorphin speaker the 15" works as high as 400-500hz.
so you should pay attention to the diaphragm weight too.
if you are limiting yourself with eminence drivers, i would look at a tried and tested model.
Troels used deltalite II with good results.
deltalite has a lighter diaphragm with the only major problem of also having a highish Fs.
if i was looking at pro audio woofers, i would go with Qts of 0.30-0.40, efficiency of >98dB, lowest possible Fs, lowest possible mms (and high Qms/Bl, and low Le, and high-ish xmax).

I have a pair of P17's. I used the Alpha, but the Deltalite looks very interesting, as well as being more efficient. Troels knows his stuff..
I intended to use the Altecs but they are hard to get a hold of in pairs, as well as being expensive. The Deltalites are not cheap in the UK however.

Sorry to bring back an old thread but I'm interested on hearing opinions on these?

Old threads, when relevant, keep this thing together I'd say. We don't always do the search before asking questions so refreshing a topic already covered works for some of us. And it reminds the non-genius portion of the forum of things we've wanted to learn about.
