I was looking around Home Depot and found a new product by Dow BioProducts: Woodstalk Fiberboard. It looks similar to MDF but is 10-20% lighter, significantly stronger and available in thicknesses up to 3/4". It's made from environmentally-friendly byproducts of the wheat growing process.

What about the final cost ?We use a similiar product in the shop for when doing laminate countertops, as a replacement for particle board since it's cheaper. However, for the stock that we get from Rennberg it's definitally not better then MDF. It has less workability since it seems have larger particles, extremely poor screw holding capability, doesn't appear to be any stronger either. The 5'x12' sheets are definitally lighter then anything else however, which is nice. Also if you have allergeries this stuff is going to destroy you, it smells just like straw - and puts up a fine mist into the air whenever you cut it. It is however cheap, like $12 for a 4'x8' sheet I believe.
