I have had thoughts about making speakers out of these sorts of materials.
At a minimum, I could do a nice baffle to face an MDF box.
The super-cheap wood effect stuff I was looking at last night was £16 a sq metre - £19 for a pack. 1.2M long by I think 14CM wide. Could easily make a pair of slim floorstanders out of that.
Ha! I found an instructable.

Many of these boards are a plywood construction with a fair face and some tongue/groove to lock them together.
The tongue & groove are sometimes made from an engineered fibre rather than the base ply.
Plywood is a standard material for speaker boxes.
You may need to glue two or more layers together to get sufficient stiffness and strength across the joints.
Try the second layer at right angles to the main longitudinal strips.

Most of the B&Q ones seem to be HDF cored. Thicknesses vary from cheapo 6mm up to 12-14mm. I spotted a parquet square effect board with a 390mm pattern to it. Could be amusing for a small sub.
