Re: mini madness?

Hi Mike,

WOW! I _really_ like this system. It's a real pity that the Madison drivers are unobtainium now.

I'm considering a scaled down version with the pr170m0/atp80 combo that I have been enjoying for several years now (thanks for that gem) and a pair of 18" in a WMTMW.

The 18's Im considering are this beyma.

or this Selenium
http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&Partnumber=264-394

If I'm understanding you the Beyma has OK QTS at 0.59 but it's 96 DB 1/1. The Selenium is 98 DB 1/1 but the QTS is low at 0.43. Price wise it's a wash between them, both are to much. LOL

Anyway, thank you for sharing the madness, I can't even quess how many hours of musical enjoyment I've had because of your efforts. I find the simple (when some one shows you LOL) pr170m0/atp80 combo is so good that I just can't listen to many other speakers now.

Regards

Hello! Sounds like a plan - I'd go with the Beyma = I wonder about these 21's

Maybe they can provide more info if you email or call them

Hey Magnetar, I see you're a fan of nice huge dipoles also! That means you've found a way to achieving similar/better results to SL's Orions as I did. Don't worry, there will always be doubters out there to try and spoil the fun. Do what I've finally started to do and ignore them. Some people just think that they know everything and that they are the only ones who are right. It's ok, let them think that. Whatever floats their boat I always say. It's their loss.

There's two reasons why I wanted to add to this thread, (1) because of our fondness of large, successful dipoles, and (2) because a certain someone just had to bring my name up thinking he knows everything...

Anyway, as I've stated several times before (because of the "certain someone"), the reason my old dipole subs worked so good as well as my new wide-range dipoles is due to their sheer overall size. And if that "certain someone" would think for a few minutes before shooting off his big mouth, he would see what we are doing, what SL was doing in designing the Orion, and what we are all achieving in the end.

One of SL's goals with the Orion is a small design that looks good, sounds good and fits into most rooms, big and small. In order to have a small dipole with decent output and bass extension, low Q woofers with high Xmax, undersized baffles and loads of EQ and power are needed to compensate. Guess what, this totally goes against what SL says is optimal for OBs.

Why my OB projects and Magnetar's OB project work is because we stuck to part of the original SL OB "rules"... Large baffle, high Qts, low-ish Fs driver. The high Qts, high efficiency drivers and large baffles we use allow our dipoles to reach the same performance goals as the Orions (or better them) without loads of Xmax, EQ and power, however at the cost of a much larger loudspeaker and most likely lower WAF. Apparently, neither one of us care about the size or WAF of our loudspeakers.

My newest/current dipoles use drivers that are not that ideal for OB use. They have high efficiency, low-ish Fs and are mounted to large baffles, but they have a fairly low Qts of 0.30. Because of the low Qts, they lack the low bass extension of my old dipole subs and Magnetar's OBs. I have to compensate with some EQ on the low end, but it still doesn't go that low. Then again, my baffles are only 24"W x 82"H x 4.25"D. They are at least good enough to blend in perfectly with my sub at 50Hz which is all that really matters in the end. And the midrange, bumped up the xover freq to 1kHz now and mmmm... 😀

Thanks guys for your comments on the Beyma 18".

It will be awhile before I can build these, like Lynn Olson I'm recovering from a badly broken leg ATM so I'll continue the driver search for now.

Madision has completely vanished! I found these specs Madison Executioner 21--Fs: 28, Qts: 1.17 and that's about all I found. Is this the driver you are using Mike?
