Greets!
Complete computer ignoramus here! I recall reading back in the early days of SP3 that this update can cause all sorts of problems and not to install it except in desperation to cure whatever ails your computer, so for all these [mostly] trouble free years with just SP2 have ignored MS's ~continuous 'demands' to 'upgrade.
Now that XP is no longer being supported by MS and no desire to 'upgrade' to a newer OS, should I gamble and install it or.......?
TIA,
GM

XP SP3 required you to agree to a lot more restrictive EULA, IIRC and that is what much of the fuss was about. I have never had any problems I could associate with SP3 on any of my XP machines.
I have an old laptop that I never upgraded beyond SP2 and I cannot use newer 32 bit software based on the newer .net versions. I would also _never_ go online with an unpatched windows system.
If you don't want to pay to upgrade, make a linux box with ubuntu, it is pretty seamless for most things people do like word processing and web surfing.
If you choose to keep XP, then certainly apply SP3. Don't use IE for anything outside your system. I admit, I still have two XP systems, 3 win7 systems, one 8.1, three linux and one Solaris....
I recently upgraded my pc motherboard, processor and graphics card.
Now XP wont install on it.
This means I cant run old 16 bit software that I have used for many years.
Be aware of this if you decide to upgrade your computer.
I am using Win 8.1 , this isn't too bad now it has settled down.

My machine is XP Media Edition, and the reports of problems with that version were overwhelming when installing SP3. I decided not to bother. It's just more FUD. Why would hackers go after a fading OS vs. the newer ones? Nothing has stopped working and when it does I'll probably go Linux. I'm down to very few programs that absolutely need Windows.
Gm, you can download Ubuntu, burn it to a DVD and try it without installing it.
It's a different animal that's for sure and it is taking a while for me to get used to
it. But if you try it and like it you can install it alongside XP and chose at boot time
which operating system to use. If you do install sp3 expect it to take at least an
hour or more to install it and have some problems.

upgrade to SP3 base and turn off Windows Updates don't install any aditional update because sometimes cause troubles.
I never had any problems with SP3 nor any subsequent updates. Maybe it's because I searched for updates every day and installed them immediately when available.
I got one system that is still dual booting XP home premium/Vista .
I installed XP SP 3 a long time ago and there was not any problems ....... this includes updating XP when there were still updates available.
I also had a system that had XP pro with SP3 with no problems.

I have a '95 and a '98 system up and running. Course, the firewall is called an air gap.

From memory SP3 was nothing more than all the security updates since SP2 rolled into one package. Certainly i am not aware of any "issues" with it, i always religiously keep all machines up to date at all times. (I'm an IT guy, its part of my daily grind).
@Nigel have you tried running XP in a virtual machine? I also have Windows 98 virtual machines running on my 8.1 for the few ancient apps i use from time to time.
lol at jneutrons "air gap" firewall, always trust analog solutions over digital eh.

It wasn't by choice. Had to pull network access as the opsystems lost antiviral support.
Also can't afford to upgrade, as both run million dollar plus motion control systems, and upgrades mean serious downtime. Luckily, the functionality I need out through 2021 (give or take) was pre-considered and put in when I designed the systems.
We are putting effort into something from this century, but it'll take a few years to implement. It gets weird when the system is almost older than the EE's I interview.😱

This doesn't really answer your question, however, the best advice I can give is that you all should be using a disk imaging program such as Acronis... then you can try all sorts of stuff with no worries and just revert back if there are issues. Its the best safety net you can have and speaking for myself, the single most valuable program I have. There are free offerings to that at least allow basic imaging to be done.

I'm running XP-Home SP2 which has been b*st*rd*sed to think that it is XP-Pro so that I can install and run a Jaguar Mongoose diagnostic set-up.
I wonder what would happen if I tried to run XP-Pro SP3 ?
Just to add, this is on my Laptop, this main PC is running bonafide Windows 7.
The SP would detect that the computer is running XP-Pro but the files would be different.
