I used to do clean installs but I don't any more either the antivirus works or it doesn't.
That's one way of looking at it 😉
(I'm not having a good day with my old Vista PC... totally off topic but if anyone has any off the wall ideas 🙂
A new router has caused svchost.exe and the Windows Update process to run at 100% CPU and 100 RAM%. What is bizarre is that all my Acronis images back to day one also show the same behaviour. All the images were fine when on the old router. I can restore an image and take it to a friends router and its still broken as soon as it connects to the web.
It is as if the OS was tagged or modified in some way from day one on the original router. I've spent a week on it and got nowhere 🙁)

Lol, I think I've seen pretty much all these... no offence 🙂 I do appreciate the reply. The first base image has this problem and that was made two years ago, back before IE was ever clicked. It was the dream install, just Vista, updates and service packs and absolutely nothing else.
Its as if the router has set some flag or file... something... such that everything back to day one will only work with that one router (which is now gone, swapsy by BT).

The current Windows 10 activation is in a real mess.
I managed to upgrade from W8.1 to Windows 10 ok.
I then changed my motherboard and processor to Skylake.
Tried to activate windows and it will no longer activate.
If I go into Microsoft store it gives me a new product key but Windows keeps telling me it is a bad key.
If I put in my previous W8.1 key it tells me that is bad too.
From a search of the Internet Microsft is trying to fix the activation problems.
I am getting all sorts of weird results. Sometimes I get the desktop message "Windows needs activating" and other times it is not there !

My music and picture files on this machine (Samsung laptop) are about 8G of 100G, Windows 8 bloatware and program files, Adobe etc consume 86% of what is left not allowing enough to upgrade to WIN 10.

Your operating system has no idea what router you are using. At the most, the router hands it an IP address, a default gateway, and DNS server info. None of these things would result in the behaviour you have described.
Simultaneous events do not always indicate causation. But you know this already. It puzzles me that you think a new router could have a direct effect on your OS.

It was the fact that hours before when last used the PC was fine. On switching on again and connecting to the new router it was not.
Anyhow... news... and good news. The problem is one of Microsofts making. There has been a rumour of MS throttling the bandwidth on the Vista servers to accommodate W10 upgrades. Whether true or not I don't know but there seem to have been other odd reports similar to mine coming out of the woodwork in the last 24/48 hours.
Suddenly it works. I restored my last image to take another look and it just popped the 'updates are available' notice as if nothing had happened.
So I'm less than impressed at the moment with MS and Windows Update, particularly since even in W8.1 there have been problem updates. Adobe Flash player integral to 8.1 is the latest. The update offered last week was of the developer version that pops up debug script all the time. Today a patch was offered. One in a line of problems.

....svchost.exe .....
With Windows it's often difficult to tell. On my Lenovo Win 7 64 notebook svchost was making calls to Update and driving a consistent 60-70% utilization. It didn't act like a low priority thread as per Microsoft's assurances. Completely disabling automatic updates disrupted their design by freeing the CPU for use by the computer's owner instead of a Richmond tech.
My vista pc had been off line for approx 2 weeks and needed to catch up with Augusts updates so yesterday I put it back on line . It took 20 minutes to come back with the list of updates available , during which time windows update was hogging the pcs resources (the pc is set to notify me of available updates ) . After downloading and installing it also took a longer than normal time to notify MS of the successful update
I guess the bottom line is,
Eventually you will have to upgrade or change operating system😕
That's why I just changed..I only ran 8.1 for about 9 months..It was a non starter without classic shell..
I'm not a fan of the new start menu either..😀
I'm waiting for the new windows 10.1 rusty nail version 2.
Then 10.2/.3/win 10 version 11..😀 etc Windows 10 new millennium..windows 10 XP..windows 10 PITA..
Windows 10 Linux version..Windows 10 open source..at which point the operating system will be replacing the bios..so you will have it without choice.
PC's will be a solid block of plastic..no removable parts and no connections all similar to Bluetooth. Charge by inductive loop.
Ah well..

W10 is a problem child to me, W8.1 I find terrific if a little bland visually.
It was only the outcry over 8/8.1 that lead to the hasty development of W10 AFAIK. All the OS's have their good and bad points but 10 went in a direction that left me cold. Vista, even now at 8yrs old, is still a head turner visually, and it has user customisation that was never carried over to even W7 (I dislike W7 for that reason).
Being interesting to see where it all ends up if this is the last 'Windows ever' as MS promise. I'd bet within eighteen months there will be something new in the rumour mill 😉

Well I'd like W8.1 to have the customisation of Vista (file and folder views, random sorting and placement and also the customisable folder icons), oh, and also the Aero Glass of Vista.

that's why W7 is still around...I want windows 10 looks like 7 version.
I assume W10.3 will be OK (following MS pattern, MSDOS 1.3 was good, 2.x sucked, DOS3 was good, DOS 3.3 was better, DOS 4.x and 5.x sucked,, Win 3 was the first useable MS Windows, 3.3 was the first real improvement, etc.)

Spybot Anti-Beacon for Windows 10
Safer Networking, the developers of Spybot have released a new tool fro Windows 10, called Spybot Anti-Beacon, that allows Windows 10 users to immunize their computers and changes settings, so that Windows 10 phones home less.
Concerns have been raised about Windows 10 privacy settings, with users fearing rightly or wrongly that Windows 10 collects a lot of data, which it send home to Microsoft. Seeing that there was currently no good tool which can safely disable tracking in Windows 10, Spybot decided to release this tool.
