Windows 10

Downloaded some W10 install iso images and burnt them to DVD
If you ask for the combined 32 & 64 bit install disc image you need a DL 8.5gb DVD as it wont fit on a 4.7gb disc.
3 PC's upgraded so far. 2 with no issues. Biggest issue I think I am going to have is with old graphics cards not being supported. Was worried about drivers for equipment like USB WIFI adaptors but most have just worked when plugged in.
Just been through the issues with getting rid of XP and getting everything up to Win 7 now Win10 has upped the spec once again.
Any machines I have that don't make the grade get pensioned off with a fresh install of Linux Xubuntu LTS. and are usually given away to friends.

Well at least in ATL it will be ok in WV who knows.

Closest airport to us is Pittsburgh PA. There have been minimal problems there but that's where one of my laptops died. Several people all grabbing the plastic tote bins off the conveyor at the same time caused the bin containing my laptop, wallet, keys and phone to hit the floor, killing the laptop.

The worst TSA people are in Ft. Lauderdale. They open luggage, steal prescription medicines, and trash the contents, complain about every detail and toss your stuff into the trash bin with little reason and zero explanation. I'm headed back to Florida again next week, by car. This POS laptop with W10 goes along for the ride.

they will start to extract money from you for the privilege to use W10.

Look at the other big players in the OS market. How do they extract money, and how does M$ emulate them?

Apple makes a big chunk of $$$ from the little evil they invented called the IAP (In App Purchase) want to get to the next level in this cool free game, pay $1 for a "power boost". Want to unlock the good instruments in Garage Band, buy them. UH, I did. I have an iPad, I don't have a Mac, so I don't know if the same behavior is used in the higher tier OS.

Google makes 96 or 97% of their revenue from advertising, they are the masters at "targeted advertising." How do they hit their target, by gathering information on their users. Google remembers every search I have ever made, even the ones made on the computers at work which were behind a "military grade" firewall / proxy server. Enable, and look at your "Google Dashboard" this is the information that they have on you that they are willing to talk about!

Does M$ want a piece of this pie, you bet. Their big plan is to create the unified OS that runs on everything from a mid tier phone to a high end PC. That hasn't been done yet. W8 was a poor first attempt, and it still had a lower tier for non Intel hardware. Apple still has IOS and Apple OS, and Google has not done well with Android / Chrome OS on PC's.

Will W10 be the first unified OS? Probably not without some serious tweaking and growing pains. How do you get a large enough user base to see that it gets adopted at all, especially when W7 has a rather high degree of satisfied users? Well, the word FREE always helps.

There was a sign at the entrance of our local Walmart this morning. "Windows 10 is here, ask how you can get a free upgrade."

We can all speculate about W10, what it is and what it isn't. I read this article from Cakewalk about how Sonar, their DAW, works with W10, and their general experiences with MS and W10. There is one piece of good news relevant to our world that I cut from the article:

FLAC AND ALAC SUPPORT

Windows 10 has native support for these two codecs. ALAC (Apple Lossless Audio Codec) should allow better interoperability with Apple devices, while FLAC uses a lossless compression algorithm to provide a better quality (and free) alternative to MP3. Hopefully, native support in Windows might steer more people into using FLAC instead of MP3.

From this article I would infer that critical applications that would like to defer updates until the machine is idle should use W10 PRO. With W7, even the act of a background download can affect how the DAW's audio engine handles serious audio processing, or raise the noise floor. Savvy music production users already know to unplug the Ethernet cable when recording or doing other critical work.

The entire article is here:

I had a little panic today with my 8.1 install after yet more updates (compatibility for W10 I assume).

Windows Photo Viewer. There is a spelling mistake on the user interface when you select 'Print' from the dropdown.

Just taken the plunge.

So far, the task bar is now black, and the battery and WiFi icons appear to have fallen over.
Speed is similar to W8.1, but this is a very fast laptop.

Haven't tried Edge yet, but the icon is still just a bit too familiar.

It is usually because the site you are downloading it from doesn't have enough upload bandwidth to sim

Also math 😀. Your 40Mb (million bits per second) download bandwidth, downloading a 4GB (billion bytes @8bits per). TCP packets are not all payload, nor are the IP packets built from those, and every packet needs to be ACKed. There is a lot of overhead, including from the application layer. How long does it take to copy a 4GB file on your local drive, or from one partition to another on the same drive, or from one physical drive to another? How about across your LAN? So the notion of a few minutes to download a 4GB file on a 40Mb link just doesn't add up.

Windows 10 has removed Media Center, and is charging $10 extra to download a very basic DVD S/W player with no BluRay capability. Microsoft wants users to purchase their Xbox as a set-top box to provide Media Center functionality. I use Media Center in Win 8.1, and I plan to wait until the end of the free Win10 update period to both gauge S/W quality and to see if Microsoft decides to add improved Media Center to Win10. I have also been studying 3rd party media center S/W Kodi, MediaPortal, and MythTV for similar functionality replacement when I convert to Win10.

I will accept the free update to Win10 for work compatibility, and will probably install Kodi as my TV Media Center.

As is now common, my older computer runs Linux, but has minimal personal data and is used for safer browsing. I experiment with free speaker Xover S/W on this machine.

W10:. I use my PC to RDP to work via a secure connection. As far as I know my employer has not yet approved use of W10 for this purpose, and i do not intend to have my employment terminated for using unauthorized software. I don’t even know whether the required software will work on W10.

Hi Linesource, there are media players from $100-150 running Android TV, these are far better than Media Center, there are many plugins for various media streams as well as Kodi etc. Try something built from the ground up for this task. Media Centre is average in comparison IME.

I have installed Win 10 on 8 PC's so far.
Biggest pain was setting up my homegroup which was eventually cured by turning off all the computers on the network, which allowed me to set the homegroup up on one PC, and then systematically turning on the other PC's and getting them to join.
Only issues so far are 2 old unsupported graphics cards, and a Dell Precision m6600 laptop which did not like Win 10 at all. The m6600 rolled back to Win 7 with no problems.
Have had no problem with using Win 7 drivers for older PC components.
Setting up Cortana was a pain. Had to make sure all the language packs were updated and matched (UK). The latest service pack has fixed some of the issues with Cortana.
I will probably be turning that feature off for Me, I don't want Microsoft tracking my every move, but My 12 year old is already getting Cortana to sing songs at her verbal request!😉

If you have not yet received a notification to upgrade to Windows 10, you should be patient! You have no reason to hurry: You can upgrade for free until July 2016. It may be a good idea to at least wait until the big fall update, Threshold 2, is released.

yup still waiting for my notification, I'm not going to force an upgrade. when / if I do I might have to pull that 3 GB data drive so it doesn't get auto reformatted due to new untested SATA driver on this old rig.

I read that some older games will not install on W10 due to the copyprotect SW that is not supported anymore... Illegal downloads of those games (hacked) seem to run however.😱

Verdict: M$ supports piracy 😀😀😀

but still: found no reason yet to install W10

the war on piracy is futile, and not working, sending kids to prison is the dumbest thing Ive heard of. If they are deciding which of my material is ok and legit then there I seriously something wrong with the world. Who are the real criminals here?

My Dell Vostro 3750 doesn't like 10 either. Clean installs fail and upgrade installs are crippled.

Sticking to 8.1 and thank goodness for Acronis, the most important program I have.

I have upgraded some old Toshiba satellite laptops with win 10 no problems and disabled Cortana. IE isn't to good but Edge works OK.

I used to do clean installs but I don't any more either the antivirus works or it doesn't. I don't tend to have as much stuff on PCs as I used to.
I have used Acronis in the past it was great for dual booting etc. But there is always the GRUB 😀

I use Gparted for partioning, its old school but I like it!

Regards
M. Gregg
