Both 'Edge' and W10 are works in progress imo.
Its going to be very interesting to see if W10 keeps its shine and develops or whether the wheels fall off 😀
Well it feels like an old pram at the moment..squeak..squeak..😀
I just keep converting windows back to look like W7..
It feels like they have done what they can with operating systems and they can possibly make it more stable ...but what do you do when you have gone as far as you can with existing architecture...revamp and recycle the same thing over and over again (just like audio)
If you look at Linux or windows anything usable looks like the same thing ie as you move towards perfection the end result has got to be the same thing..same with aero dynamics etc..I assume there is one perfect human interface without physically connecting your brain to the PC.
I have a wheel so to make more money I will reinvent it! The computer is now mass produced junk..so what comes next..I think we are bored now with the new /old invention..The PC is the interface the main bit looks like the internet to me! Faster than light speed and totally free..how else can you improve..<<its got to come..when the fat cats loosen their grip on the money. The focus should be the internet.. totally free for everyone.

Thats well said
I still really like Vista if I'm honest. At least its viually attractive to use (and super stable as is 8.1). Microsoft say 10 is the last Windows release but that doesn't mean there will not be someting totally new in future, there has to be as hardware, its interface and devices develop. Thats what many can't see, W10 will be constantly updated they are told (or thats how they interpret it)...... and for ever.
Lol, I think not.
As you suggest, the internet and also I think faster web sites need to be where the development is. Faster and faster download speeds make no difference to my experience of the web. The sites themselves with their chronic slow loading are where the problems are. On a verified 40Mb download link why does it 40 minutes to download a 3 or 4Gb ISO file when it should take a couple of minutes.

This is an interesting read,
Windows 10 Update: How to remove live tiles from Start Menu | BGR
And this:
Perhaps this is a good opportunity to check out Microsoft’s nifty new Edge browser. In it, click on this link and set both “Personalised ads in this browser” and “Personalised ads wherever I use my Microsoft account” to off. This will disable Microsoft’s Google-style ad tracking features.
The above is from here:

Let apps use my camera<<er I don't think so!
So lets look at a stupid scenario..your camera could be turned on and your microphone and someone could see and hear everything your doing <<now I'm just getting paranoid.. 😀 (privacy setting let apps use my camera)"OFF". Let apps use my microphone..er "OFF".
Cortana<<<yikes! (I want to get to know you!) Really?
Have you seen the Privacy settings screen?

Will be interesting to see if they finally stopped to have exessive HDD load in windows. I have used Linux mint for 1½ now, and besides certan programs that dont work in linux, it works great, stable and not "attacking" my harddrive/ssd constantly. Windows seems like a nagging gf, when Linux on the other hand seems like a good friend that you can trust - less bs. But when computers turn into intimate relations, instead of a plain tool - which it should be in my opinion - then things tend to be complicated really fast.
I have installed linux on computers for alot of elderly people, for some time now. And they are very happy with the simpel and non obtrusive interface of Linux mint. Just the simple task of plugging in a printer they bought in the local supermarket, seems as simpel as it should bee. In windows you have to fight with nagging drivers, adware and anoying commercials. Just my opinion - fair enough if things work differently for you - but luckily it is still a kind of free choice.

It appears you need to restart regularly.
If you use sleep etc updates don't seem to get installed.

It is usually because the site you are downloading it from doesn't have enough upload bandwidth to simultaneously satisfy all the users trying to download stuff from the same site. Try the same download on non peak hours for the area / country you are downloading from.
I downloaded the W10 64 bit install package early Friday morning my time, about 4 AM Redmond (M$) time, in about 10 minutes. From my experience a similar sized download on Friday evening takes 30 minutes to an hour.
Out here in the middle of nowhere my download speed can be anywhere from 4 or 5 Mb/s with complete dropouts for minutes at a time (no Youtube streams) during prime time to 120 Mb/s early in the morning.

I think they will at some point 😉

Exactly. These are the kind of areas that need addressing. I believe many sites also pull material from different sources to construct the full page, another major bottleneck. Being persuaded to go from 8Mb to 20Mb to 40Mb (and so on) download speeds make no real difference for most sites in the real world at the moment.
A little googling shows that you can expect problems if you use Nvidia graphic cards and two monitors.
Windows 10 Automatic Updates Start Causing Problems - Forbes
I have had no such issues since last October.
An other issue is with the fast power save mode since Win 7. Where data is not full written to a common disk and left this disk "dirty" state.
Older OS gets puzzled and checkdsk will clean out this dirty data 😱
In may case where I test XP...Win10, each OS on a removable HD and one separated master development data disk.
The problem rises as soon you start installing on a new HD like Win 10 and your common data disk gets read & write.
To avoid this issue and allow stemless operations 😀
1) disconnect your common data disk
2) install new OS
3) switch off the hibernate Admin Dos> "powercfg -H off"
4) now your common data disk may reconnected

Hadn't seen that, thanks for sharing (lol 😉). Actually, I imagine that will not go down well with a lot of folk.
Mooly, the extra speed does come in handy for what really matters; torrents.
Thanks. I've never dabbled in that, never needed to tbh.
My laptop got "upgraded" all by itself on Wednesday. It is still working and I have not resorted to wiping it and putting W7 on it yet. W8.1 almost brought me to that point several times. After dropping a laptop in the Pittsburgh airport security line a few years ago, I never keep any critical info on a laptop, so wiping this one would not be a big deal.
This morning I got an email from M$ explaining that it was time for my machine's upgrade. There was an explanation, and instructions as to how to download the image and burn a DVD for upgrading any or all of my "legitimate" W7 or W8 machines. I downloaded and burned the disk. I think I will pop a fresh SSD in the sacrificial machine, install Vista on it and see what happens if I try to "upgrade" it.
My real question is how did this machine get upgraded on Wednesday if my upgrade wasn't supposed to happen until today?
Sorry, little unclear whether you're saying you went from 7 or 8.1 to Win 10 on Wednesday, but it is possible to downgrade within 30 days of the upgrade (there's a 30 day grace period before it purges the old install.
Not sure on your second question though - I've been running Windows Technical Preview on my HTPC since mid/late last year so I've not gone through the normal process.
All that said, as a whole, I think Windows 10 really is worth upgrading to. Seems to be faster and more stable. Obviously with some old programs out there that may not play nice. Note that I use Classic Shell to get the familiar (and far better IMHO) Start Menu. Also FYI, doesn't look like Vista can be upgraded for free.
little unclear whether you're saying you went from 7 or 8.1 to Win 10
The laptop came with W8.0 installed which I upgraded to 8.1 when it came out. I have never liked 8 or 8.1 since it takes me longer to do something than it does on a W7 machine, especially if a lot of cut and pasting between several programs is needed.
ASUS will not fix the machine, so I may attempt surgery on it my self. My first look says that the motherboard and al the individual LIPO cells will need to be removed to get to the touch pad. If that goes well I will then decide whether I will keep W10 or install W7. If the machine works good enough to be useful for more than forum posts and email, I will use a good OS and install a SSD. It already has a Core I7 and 8 gig of ram.
How the machine went from 8.1 to 10 without action on my part, I don't know. It has done strange things in the past without user intervention. I believe this is related to the hypersensitive touchpad.
Also FYI, doesn't look like Vista can be upgraded for free.
That is the official policy, but I may have found a way around this. I had a Vista machine that I had been using as a DVR with WMC over a year ago when I was in Florida and could get antenna TV. I dug the machine out of the closet and let it take a few dozen updates. Then I put in an old W7 upgrade disk that I have previously used and activated several years ago. I turned off "activate when online" and did not activate the W7. Over several days and 200+ updates, the "upgrade to W10 icon has appeared. I am not sure I want W10 on this machine yet, so I may repeat the procedure on the sacrificial machine with a different SSD.
So far the only thing I don't like about W10 is the Edge browser. Again it takes me longer to get stuff done, but this may just be unfamiliarity.
Some people have installed IE on W10, but IE may go away over time. Firefox may be next if I keep W10.
I found if I did a search for "Windows 10 download tool" it comes up wit ha page where you can download Windows 10 immediately.
One solution for your touchy touch pad. Disable it, and plug in a mouse. I've never actually liked touchpads, and find a mouse easier to use. Wireless mice are inexpensive.
