Will I harm the unit by doing this?

I have an electronic crossover, Nakamichi EC-200. I wonder if I tie the low frequency output and mid & high frequency output together, by means of Y-cables, as shown in green circle on attached, will I break the unit, by shorting circuit or else?

That could do harm to the op amps if you turn the level controls all the way up.
Best to use something like 5k series resistors at each output before connecting them together.
But this will reduce the output level somewhat.

Why would you want to do that, instead of just bypassing the unit altogether?

Why can't the unit do that already?
The unit was originally designed to send the outputs to two amplifiers: low frequency and high frequency amplifiers, or bi-amplification configuration.

However, I'd like to use it with a single amplifier (no bi-amping). So I still need full-range signal but would like to adjust low frequency level independently by the knob.

Commoning outputs will lead to circuits fighting each other and could lead to distortion, maybe oscillation, and horrible sound perhaps. Opamps shouldn't damaged however, they are designed to handle shorted outputs indefinitely. To combine outputs a resistive mixer could be used, as referred to already.

Ok, then just use series resistors on all outputs. Around 5k is fine.
My friend suggested me that I may not want to use the additional series resistors because there are already 100-Ohm resistors at the outputs, red circles, to prevent the op-amps from being damaged if tying the outputs together or shorting the outputs to ground.

Is he true?

Hi presscot,
You probably won't permanently damage the unit, but don't expect low distortion either. You are mis-using this unit. 5K resistor summing elements as suggested by rayma are he best idea if you insist in doing this. Mind you, you may get funny frequency response due to phase shifts.

Audio Control and others made bass boost units for your purpose. I did warranty service on these units back then and know them pretty well. The Nakamichi car component units were very good.

Most new car amplifiers can be had with bass boost features. Why not go that route instead? You really are wasting a really nice crossover.
